I'm looking for a short (< 20 hours), relatively recent RPG game with a good story. Any recommendations?
It seems most RPG games these days are moving in the direction of open world, which is not a direction I like because I always feel compelled to do everything and it takes me forever to complete those games (e.g. dragon age, borderlands 2)
My main requirement is an engaging, surprising/twisty story. Examples of games where I enjoyed the story: Mass Effect series, KOTOR, Bioshock Infinite. Also, no horror games, prefer scifi (although not required)

Interested in something called Grandia 2? 20 hours story, fantasy though not sci-fi.

The Ys games are pretty short, might wanna look into those.

Witcher 2. It's not open world, each Act has a map that you can explore. Should last you 15-30 hours depending on how many sidequests you do.
You don't need to play Witcher 1 ( hell I would say avoid it ) but reading the books will make you enjoy it much more.

Tyranny comes to mind. Its pretty sure for a RPG.

Chrono Trigger is honestly quite short...its the replays that make it long..Wild Arms 1 and 2 i can usually clock in about 10-15 hours pretty easily and the old Mario RPGs are honestly not that long.... Originally Posted by hellhamster

The Banner Saga and The Banner Saga 2. Both are linear, take can be completed within 20 hours, and have a heavy narrative focus. They are also my most favorite western RPGs yet, 10/10 from me, and I rarely ever give out a 10/10.
