Ultimately, it comes down to what you've been exposed to. I'm sure if you asked a Christian burning witches at the stake if they supported the act or not back in the 1600s you probably wouldn't have gotten much hesitation in the 'yay' column. Same thing goes with owning slaves back in the 1800s. It's hard to form an opinion on something if the only thing you've been exposed to is that thing and it is socially acceptable and the social norm.
You kind of make that point too with how Muslim countries closer to Europe or with ties tend to be more liberal. The more you know.
