No, by nature, you cannot grasp analogies.
I once got beaten in high school for calling my government fascist. Do I approve of it? No. Did I see that coming? Yes. I didn't whine, "Oooooooh, evil people, not understanding my righteousness!", I simply understood the fact that the world doesn't care about your righteousness, and whenever you say or do something controversial and confrontational, there is a chance it will hit you back in the face. Chance we, responsible adults, all accept.
No, I will be against it. At the same time, I will agree that they should have seen it coming.
I come originally from a country where being a liberal activist got you in jail or, sometimes, in morgue. Trust me, your problems of a few violent idiots breaking into a fist fight do not impress me.
Non-violence is morally superior to violence. But the threat of violence is something the left needs to embrace.
Think of it like this. No country has directly attacked another one when they both have nuclear weapons. Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in an ultimate act of non violence. It lost its threat of violence and has since been invaded by Russia. The left need to accept that the threat of violence is a powerful tool, rather than giving the monopoly to the right.
Lets not pretend this is one sided either.
'One Trump supporter who took part in the violence came equipped with a baton, a gas mask and a shield emblazoned with the American flag.'
No. You're just the next generation of douchebags that complain about Nazis while supporting political violence. An actual move from the Nazi Playbook, which never stops being a hilarious and terrible irony.

And if that dipshit didn't act in self defense or goaded a fight, he deserves to be clapped in irons.
Here's hoping these groups that gather to attack people exercising their 1st amendment rights get labeled exactly as they are, terrorists. For that matter, I hope Trump with holds funding from Berkely. Would be pretty iconic to strip their "white privilege" and appropriate those funds for places like flint or detroit.
