Thread: Upgrades!

    Upgrades!

So as its my 31st Birthday (yay?), I was given a gift card for computer parts and/or accessories!
THe giftcard is at 3000NOK which is $350 or 330 Euros I believe if my conversion rates are roughly correct.

That said, I'm not sure what to sink my money into as the parts that are currently in my desktop, the CPU seems to be the lowest end.
With that in mind I'm not sure if its worth investing in a new CPU

I therefore turn to you guys and hope you can help a brother out.

What I am currently looking at switching out is either my CPU or my GPU

    Current CPU: I5 2500K
    Current GPU: XFX Radeon 7870 2GB DDR5

For games I play its mostly WoW Raiding, have been streaming, but mostly recording things these days.
Pre-ordered Mass Effect Andromeda and should be able to play it March 16th already, meaning I probably wont get the upgrade before I start playing it.
Other than that its the normal stream watching. Currently on a 1 monitor setup as I gifted 1 of my screens to my stepson, so techincally I could invest the money in a second monitor, but right now it seems that upgrading the actual rig seems to be a better way to spend my money.

According to the build of the month the recommended CPU to buy right now is the i5 7600 as the i7 7600 and 7700 is over 1k NOK higher in price (component prices in Norway is a bit on the high side.

So with all that. Thanks for reading and I hope you can help me narrow it down!

You should buy legos and get off the computer and play with the step son more.

My youngest stepson is 12 and is higher ranked in League than me. Dont think he has played with Legos for years!

(give them a computer before sports take them, right?)

Probably GPU, but CPU/MB/RAM could also use a Upgrade. It would be different if it was a 2600K or 2700K. For WoW your GPU is fine, but for Mass Effect 4 you could use a GPU Upgrade.

    Probably a 480 or a cheap 1070.

The i5 never came in a 2600k. The 2600k was an i7. Do you have the i5 or i7?

Is your CPU overclocked? Or are you willing to overclock? If yes, then I'd say your best upgrade would be a new GPU. Going from a 7870 XT to a GTX 1070 was a world of difference in my computer. The gains from a 2500k/2600k to a 7600k/7700k aren't nearly as large as an upgrade from the 7870 to a more modern GPU would be and overclocking the 2500k/2600k closes that gap even more.

I edited my post as you wrote this.

My brain must have shortwired as it is indeed a 2500K which has been edited in both posts!

That said, My CPU is clocked at 4.4ghz atm so looking at your argument, it seems that a GPU is most likely the best upgrade I can get right now. Within my price range and the Norwegian prices of PC components, I can get a 480 4gb at 2.5k NOK while a 1070 is up at 3.5k NOK.

Looking at the benchmarks and tests with a quick look, it seems that they are pretty even in performance, but if anyone has a more hands on experience with the cards, feel free to give me a reason to chuck in the extra cash to get the 1070
Bothering to actually read properly, the GTX 1070 is way better. Gonna make the choice hard. Not nessescarily playing on 1440p though so might not be worth the extra 1k NOK. Hmmmm

If all you play is wow a GTX 1070 would be better as all blizzard games run better on Nvidia hardware.

The i5 2500K is still really good for gaming, especially when overclocked.

I'd recommend a new GPU though. I went from a 5870 to a 1060 and the difference is immense, even under a geriatric i5-750.

Its not all I play, but I get what you are saying.

In Terms of getting an 1060 its seems to be benching slightly better than the 480, so as they are on the same price range for me, its psobably better to get an 1060 card if I dont buy the 1070.

rx480 as it is better choice than 1060 (even than the 6gb version). On average 1060 would be slightly better than 480, but 480 is much better for anything dx12/Vulcan and for future in general.

i5-2500k is absolutely fine for pretty much any gaming needs right now. It's not even that much worse than latest stuff like 7600 and etc.

Get a good SSD for the rest of the gift card money.

I ended up finding an 8 gb RX480 at a reduced price so well happy with that! Can also run SLI with that card, which i cant do with a 1060 which was another thing that tilted me in that direction. Never had issues with Radeon cards in the last 3 buys so feels safe as well.

Sticking with my CPU for awhile longer and definatly looking at SSD's. Will see if I can squeeze out enough to get a 256 one.

Would like to thank everyone who bothered to comment and help me out and happy gaming to all of you!

Well, if you OC'ed it to 4GHz+ you should be somewhat solid on the CPU Front.
