the article forgets to mention that the reason the restaurant asks is because they offer a 15% discount to local residents who go to this restaurant. The waiter was just doing his job...it had nothing to do with latinas or their ethnicity.

What a weird thing for the waiter to do. It's not like their legal status in any way he would be obliged to report. IIRC, only police are obliged and there are certain conditions under which social services have to report illegal immigrants.

Super unprofessional and potentially illegal depending on what is asked. The customer has the exception to be served by an established business in a manner that is fair by law.

Unless one goes to a restaurant with the expectation to show proof of residence in order to eat some salad, that would be a highly unusual question to ask a patron where no expectation of such could be reasonably assumed or required. If it this question is being asked unequally- even more so, and that would legal in many states.

I wouldnt be surprised if the waiter asked "where are you all from" and it got blown out of proportion in order to make a story and some money. Part of being a waiter is to be sociable.

Something doesn't make sense here. Wouldn't the manager know about the 15% discount promo and then NOT fire the employee? Otherwise maybe the manager is just savage or didn't like the employee anyway and used this as justification to fire the waiter. I dunno, but something doesn't add up.

I feel they are still scumbags who should have their citizen stripped because they work for an organization and wanted proceeds of the sales of the restaurant to be sent to the same that provides services and aid to people who are NOT here legally, and tries to keep them from being deported. Considering the organization she works for, drummed-up faux racism might not be too hard to believe. It's all the rage to find a way to be a victim of something so you can soapbox about it on the internet.

Last week I was dropping off documents at the county courthouse. Going through the metal detector at the entrance. In front of me is a college-age girl, white, but wearing hijab. The deputy asks her where she's going in the building. She proceeds to get offended and ask why she needs to answer his question, and WHY is he asking her, implicating it was because of racism. But then he says he's asking everyone in the line because it's the noon-hour and many of the offices close for lunch and he wants to let people know if the office they're looking for is open or if they have to wait until 1pm. He asked me, the people after me.

Which is stupid. People shouldn't judge a restaurant on the quality of people who work there, but on the quality of the food there.

Question A: Is the food good? Yes.
Question B: Is the restaurant clean? Yes

Everything else falls into the irrelevant category. If the service or atmosphere are unappealing to the point that I don't want to be there, I get my food to go. "The customer is always right" can go die in a fucking fire. The customer is only right when they are actually right. Treating customers like they're perfect gods only leads to bad things. Treat them like people. When they're polite, I'm polite back. When they're an ass, I'm an ass back.

For the record, I do think the waiter shouldn't have done what he did. But penalizing the restaurant for his actions is stupid. Separate employee from employer. Hold the individual responsible for his own actions and leave the restaurant out of it.

I have family that have been in the US for many years with green cards, resident aliens. They deserve no aid or comfort? Despite years of paying taxes and being good, law-abiding immigrants?

I don't buy the 15% discount to locals either, since it was never offered by either the waiter or manager. I have known illegal immigrants for more years than I can count. Do I snitch on them? No. For one, they are very hard working people who "gasp" pay taxes and don't mooch off the government. Number two....do you know how much it costs to come here legally? I have a friend who's husband has been deported countless times, and he's a boomerang....soon as he can find a coyote, he's back. Has a good job, works hard, great family........just can't quite scrape up the 10,000 bucks they want him to pay. He may be the exception, but they really should give up and give him papers....seriously.
