Isnt your electric 240 volts? Taking that your heart is lethal. If the phone wasnt plugged in a socket then sure it probably wouldn't kill you? When you drop any appliance plugged into a socket into a bath and you are in it then you are asking for it. The iphone didn't electrocute him. The article is misleading.

Wall outlets are 120, 240 is for bigger stuff like dryers and ovens. It had to be the extension cord that killed him because a phone charger is DC.

If I was dumb enough to bring my phone with me into a tub, my biggest worry would be dropping it in the tub.

If I had it in the tub with me while plugged to the wall I would worry about dying.

It was worse than that, the phone was connected to the charger, which was plugged into a mains extension socket, which was plugged into the wall. He dropped the mains extension socket into the bath and became an hero.

He didn't have them because in the UK GFI is applied at the consumer unit (fusebox) instead of at the socket (thus protecting every socket not just specific ones).

It didn't protect him in this instance because he put a 240v mains power strip on his chest then lay down in a bath.

I read this as he had the extension cord on his chest. The electricity flowing into the extension is the same as as if you licked a plug.

I don't think he would have died if his phone fell into the water while plugged in. The whole extension cord fell in.

That might be; we're heavily regulated in Germany as well, but it's still taking your chances big time. Especially when it comes to older or not so well maintained buildings, where maybe hobbyist tennants already fucked around with the wiring and nobody noticed. Regulations or not, mains power and water are ALWAYS a no-no, except when it's appliances specifically built for it, like water boilers or coffee machines. And even these better have the appropiate badges from trustworthy testing agencies. No matter how you spin it: Taking your extension cord with you into the bath tub is just asking for big trouble.

If there was a GFI outlet being used, it's just not going to cause death. Period. This isn't a maybe; this is science.

I am not sure it is fast enough when you throw the plug into a pool of water.
It is only helpful if you touch it with two fingers.

When someone dies, people always look for a "valid" reason, even may not have one.
It peaces the mind of the people who are currently living.

I don't think you understand how GFIs work. GFI/GFCI are interchangeable terms, fyi.

It wouldn't because codes in the UK are just as good, he ran an extension lead from another room because we don't even allow bathroom outlets over here and all our sockets are on RCD circuits.
