Why pray tell? Is the EU en exclusive members only club?
Yes? That's literally what a union is?
There are some requirements that you must live up to, some countries have been recruited/joined that skimped on those reqs. and they've not integrated particularly well.

Tsk tsk tsk... I thought the EU was about inclusiveness.
Isn't that what the progressive left is all about?

Yes, and I'd prefer it if the EU was being a "bigot" towards countries that don't respect human rights. Maybe that makes me a racist too?

    https://europa.eu/european-union/abo.../joining-eu_en

Becoming a member of the EU is a complex procedure which does not happen overnight. Once an applicant country meets the conditions for membership, it must implement EU rules and regulations in all areas.

Any country that satisfies the conditions for membership can apply. These conditions are known as the ‘Copenhagen criteria’ and include a free-market economy, a stable democracy and the rule of law, and the acceptance of all EU legislation, including of the euro.

A country wishing to join the EU submits a membership application to the Council, which asks the Commission to assess the applicant’s ability to meet the Copenhagen criteria. If the Commission’s opinion is positive, the Council must then agree upon a negotiating mandate. Negotiations are then formally opened on a subject-by-subject basis.

Due to the huge volume of EU rules and regulations each candidate country must adopt as national law, the negotiations take time to complete. The candidates are supported financially, administratively and technically during this pre-accession period.

    - stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities;( Oh shit, they really can't fulfill this)

    - a functioning market economy and the capacity to cope with competition and market forces in the EU;( No idea what Turkey provides, export and more. But hazarding a guess, this is a hazy area forthem)

    - the ability to take on and implement effectively the obligations of membership, including adherence to the aims of political, economic and monetary union.( WELP, once more we have an issue, despite a push towards western values and ideals, this has started to regress).

Either A: I suggest you read up on international politics and what the EU is or
B: Don't ask really stupid questions you can easily google within moments.

Turkey was on the list of countries to eventually accede and they got a list of issues to work down. The progress towards that was slow and riddled with setbacks. The process is quasi-frozen now and it's unlikely to happen at our lifetimes.

Or else your not welcome. Just like it should be.
US has a bit to go on that list as well.
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.

    TL;DR
    " QUIT BOMBING THE KURDS"
to start with. Declaring war on ISIS and then proceeding to bomb regions that are widely accepted as semi-autonomous kurdish regions ( Rojava and some areas near the Syrian/Tyrkish border)

Well, he will use any negative reaction to reinforce his own statements as proof of what he's said. That's why most of Europe is just sitting there shaking its head at Erdogan, because if they get angry at him it will only, to him and his followers, prove that what he's saying is right.

That is exactly what the EU is. The EU requires its members and potential members to comply with a set of standards and rules. These conditions filter out nations that deny democracy, the rule of law, human rights and free press.

It's a quality control standard. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If Turkey cannot commit to these conditions, then it has no place in the union.

I'm also not sure you completely understand what bigotry is.

    Not really.
EU shakes it heads cos we cant afford Turkey to tear up the refugee agreement just as Turkey will wither and die without European investments.

EU shake it heads cos Turkey the Sultanship is doing nothing that will make it better for either part.

It really is shame that they haven't been allowed to join the EU "club" even though they applied in 1999.
The European Union has a very strict set of conditions to be met before a country is eligible to join, and Turkey isn't even close enough anymore to stay a candidate post-coupe.

These conditions are so strickt btw that, as an example, the US in its current state wouldn't be eligable.

Hell Turkey is the largest prison for journalists in the world. Turkey is a hell hole in every regard that is considered to be a criteria to be called a functioning democracy.

You misunderstood his point, which I agree with. If the EU takes a hard stance, then it only serves as internal reinforcement of Erdogan his rhetoric. Within Turkey his strategy is a win-win. Internationally it's a disaster, but that's not what he or any Turks care about. This is all about the referendum that will turn him into the modern Sith Emperor.

Any negative reaction from political leaders within Europe will lead to a "See this? I told you so! They deny us! They deny our human rights!" towards his followers and sycophants.

It's exceptionally warped and will ultimately only lead to his own downfall.

    Shame really.
Turkey's not in the political land mass of Europe, although we're all on the same Eurasian continent.

Politics isn't just about reacting. It's also about not reacting or reacting proportionally to a problem.

We can actually sit here and say nothing and watch Turkey destroy itself. We don't really need to say or do anything. And if we want to, it's more likely to be in the form of actions rather than words.

Ah I see. Yup agree, he is just pandering the masses of followers which will server him in a short term until their standard of living plummet if he stay on coarse.
Odds are he will tone down after the referendum but the price will be that he pissed of the entire EU with his North Korean rhetoric and that will take at least 5 years to fix.
And if the refugee crisis is over before that, well shit out of luck for Sultan Erdogan. He got no cards to play.

Its in both and judging by that Turkey previously aspired to start the road on membership i think its clear what they consider themselves to be.
