Tired of the crap, so I will attempt to inspire

First I want to preface this by saying I know I am going to get shit on for doing this.

I am tired of the negativity on the internet. I do realize that is like saying you are tired of breathing. It goes against nature. To me any kind attempt at discussion soon derails to a giant pissing contest that neither side will concede a point to. And with the current political climate it devolves more or less into "stupid libtards" and "racist sexist conservative". I myself am guilty of this behavior and I want to do something about it.

I want to attempt to change that. I want to try to post a story on a nightly basis that inspires people. Brings a little happiness to people. If you want to come here and post negativity, I humbly ask that you please don't.

Here is my first inspiration. Dobri Dobrev was born in 1914 in Bulgaria. During World War II he lost most of his hearing. He and his wife raised 4 children, 2 of which he has outlived. As he aged, he slowly became detached from material belongings, and in 2000, donated everything he owned to the Orthodox church. He currently lives in a small extension of the Saints Cyril and Methodius parish church in the village of Bailovo. He walks from his home in Bailovo to Sofia to beg. Not for himself, he lives off of a meager 80 euros a month pension (about 100 USD). Everything he collects goes towards charities, orphanages, churches and monasteries. In Bailovo he is known as Grandpa Dobri or as the Saint of Bailovo.

A crazy beggar living in the poorest country in the EU, how should I be inspired?

I just said I would attempt to inspire, I never said I would. How you take the post is entirely up to you. It is not for me to find any kind of deeper meaning for you.

It's hard not to be darkly amused that OP is pouring his heart out about all the negativity, and his first reply is this.

I found out my partner who is a medical doctor has cancer, I cannot help but be annoyed that someone is praising a beggar.

I am sorry your partner has cancer. My mom has been a cancer specialist RN and hospice nurse for over 30 years. I know how difficult cancer can be and I truly wish you both the very best of luck.

That's an inspiring story, if more people were willing to not care about what society thinks and give up on materialism we would likely have a better world.
Most people would rather die than think, and most people do. -Bertrand Russell
Before the camps, I regarded the existence of nationality as something that shouldn’t be noticed - nationality did not really exist, only humanity. But in the camps one learns: if you belong to a successful nation you are protected and you survive. If you are part of universal humanity - too bad for you -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

It says more about you than him that you read that story and all you pulled out of it was what you wrote.

Pretty sure that guy was featured on Cracked a couple times though. Nice story. They run stuff every so often that has exactly this goal in mind. Finding positive stories to combat the negativity.

Dobri once donated 23 000 dollars he had collected from begging to the church. Maybe if you were as generous as him god would not hate you.

I don't get how I can be inspired by this. He's living a shitty lifestyle and made poor life choices. I would not want to live like him.

It's another "See this guy living on the street? He's not so bad after all!" kind of thing. You can do that with anyone. Stalin loved billiards. He also loved western cowboy movies.

Though I don't share his faith, I am heartened to see someone walking the walk and talking the talk as opposed to living their lives in direct contrast to their professed faith while mouthing platitudes about their own piety. Giving of themselves to others and to the embodiment of their faith - it's a laudable goal and it's good to see someone who has rejected social expectations in favor of another ideal of life entirely.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see." ― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

There are plenty of positive on the internet if you look for it, in fact it's really overblown, you see stuff like

A wonderful human being for sure. Don't listen to all the naysayers in this thread. If you have an ounce of selflessness in your heart this should be at least somewhat inspirational. Anyone who says "I don't see how this could be inspirational" is probably a selfish ass hole. I'm sure this man is happier than any of them.

Anyways, you're absolutely right. These forums in particular could use more positivity.

I love a good inspirational cracked article. Here's one: http://www.cracked.com/photoplasty_8...r-talks-about/

Oh and if you haven't heard of it there's batkid. Kid had cancer and he was a big batman fan. So a whole city treated him like batman for a day.

Is it really so wrong that he begs for others? Does the fact that your partner is a MD somehow make them a saint? MDs can be assholes as much as the next person. Given the people the beggar and your partner surround themselves with I can't help but see a rather large distinction between the two.

I guess I can see why you come across so bitter. Either way the guy the OP mentioned seems like a good person, I don't know is if your boyfriend is. Him being a MD doesn't mean he's a good person, doctors can be cunts too.
