Exclamation Asking for donations on Twitch? I don't get this.

So last night decided to explore twitch and checkout other peoples streams and was surprised by the amount of streamers with lofty donation goals like $50, $100, $200?! Most of the streamers were girls and some of them had few viewers others actually had a good amount of viewers like 100+. None of them were anywhere near reaching their donation goal however. Is this what twitch has become now? Just stream some random game, throw up a donation goal and hope that your good looks will get you a few bucks here and there? Am i missing something?

I've never streamed on Twitch. All I have is a youtube channel but I would imagine if I would all of a sudden strated asking my subscribers on youtube for money i'm sure they'd probably give me the middle finger and unsub.

You can easily live off the donations from lonely neckbeards by being a girl.
You don't even have to be pretty, smart, funny, good at games, playing games.
Thankfully there are also ladies that don't do this but they are a minority.

    As a man?
Well, goodluck since the market is saturated to death.

I've always wondered why there are donation offers on a site that typically shows people playing games. What the fuck do these gamers want money for, and why can't they save up the money for themselves? And when people do give money so that the person does legitimately want to improve their equipment or something, do these people ever get anything in return?
Isn't it ironic how education is important, yet people forget all about it when they visit the internet?

Why not do something you enjoy and make money doing it?
    Kind of a silly question.

I mean I get e-sports, but Twitch I've always thought was kinda dumb. If you find something interesting in a video game then just record it and post a video. Who wants to watch anyone play live unless they're actually really really good? And if you want hot girls... dude you're on the internet. There is an ocean of free porn waiting for you.

But whatever. I guess there's a market for it. Just not my cup of tea.

What's not to get? People are putting forth a given talent, and allowing viewers to decide whether it has monetary value or not.

There's this one guy I know he asked for like a $1000 and got one person who donated.

Aspiring streamer, to be fair, probably has a far better shot at generating income than a musician does.

For people that stream as a job, they usually have multiple income streams. Subscriptions on twitch, they get a portion of that money. Ads on Twitch as well. Then they usually also have YouTube channels where they upload their streams broken into many small videos and get ad revenue from there as well. The donations are just more on top of that.

Also donations seem to be the way forward on Youtube as well with Patreon...

Some people make some pretty good money doing it. Colin Moriarty, who I made that thread regarding SJWs being idiots about a few weeks back... He started a channel right after that controversy and put a Patreon up. He already has 6500 patrons pledging $41,000... Per month...

Aside from the twitch gals lots of legit streamers don't ask for donations they just kind of.. allow it since people ask if they would take donations and hey who would say no to free money? Least none of the ones I follow ask for it they just give you perks and stuff if you do.

No worse than asking for Patreon donations

I personally would never give a penny to any internet celebrity (or anyone else for that matter) but there is no reason they shouldnt try.

It just looks like greedy opportunists trying to exploit gullible people to me. Playing games is the thing you usually do when you've earned money. It's like a hobby/pastime. I don't mind those people who put one or two ads on their youtube channel to have a small bit of extra money, but asking people for hundreds is ridiculous.

Exploiting is how the world works.
Those that ask for donations usually don't make it big , thankfully.

I wouldn't fault people for trying as long as they don't quit their day job. It's pretty easy to start up a youtube channel, record, and edit videos. I had a video with ~20,000 views without really even trying that hard. If I really put my mind to it I bet I could get 100k+.

Most people aren't charismatic/smart/funny enough to get a big following.
