Chinese ambassadors to the US have been hinting for years now that North Korea's saber-rattling is getting more trouble than it's worth, considering China's been funding the Kim family with their hand-me-down military hardware for decades with nothing to show for it but a small buffer between China's border and a NATO-allied country.

Mind, any war with North Korea would likely see Seoul shelled by North Korean artillery, so any operations would either need to take down their artillery first or (I'd prefer) focus on freeing political prisoners and inciting a revolution to keep the NK army too distracted to turn their eyes to taking retribution on Seoul. Because of Seoul's proximity to North Korea's border, we need to handle any potential action beyond a show of muscle to get Jong-Un back in his cage with care, can't just fly dick-first into this one with a beer in one hand and a USA #1 foam finger in the other.

It's not that simple.

Yes, China is fed up with NK bullshit, but on the other hand the prospect of war is even worse, simply because it will lead to massive illegal immigration and deployment of major western-aligned force at they doorstep, as well as huge increase of influence of western powers in the region, which will very negatively affect China's interests.

As for NK, their game is pretty simple really, they try to raise the stakes as much as possible without entering the war, so that when the time comes eventually they will be able to get more out of the deal that will be struck with major powers. It is in their interest to keep tensions very high, so that the cost of calming those down will be higher and they will be able to get more out of the deal.

Basically nobody wants war, China is the one most interested in peace deal, NK want to get as much as they can get by raising the stakes and Trump wants to flaunt his willy to show how cool he is by pouring gasoline on the flames and prodding China to act, which may actually be a good idea, because China is certainly not interested in this snowballing further.

I am. I'm just saying that if Mattis doesn't muzzle Trump, this is going to be a really long, really expensive war because a direct attack will essentially prove the Kim regime right to the people of North Korea, whereas if we can get the people to accept a revolution the problem will mostly work itself out, provided either the revolutionaries can set up a stable government or we convince China or South Korea to annex NK and play nice with their new neighbors.

Basically, I'm hoping we can put it off until we have a rational human being in charge of the military or until Mattis can convince Trump to just rubber-stamp his plans and convince him it was his own idea.
