    Criticism isn't "bashing".

The state of Missouri has the motto "Show Me", show me is something you say to intellectuals who are talking down to you. You can also see the effects of anti intellectualism on the EU and US wow general forums, the EU forums are reserved and more adult, the US forums are a riot.

We've benefited a lot from anti-intellectualism but for things like climate change it's a nuisance. We need a Pope of Science to come out on a balcony and tell us truisms every once in a while.

Err that doesn't say what you are claiming it does. That people don't believe there is a large scientific consensus says nothing about whether they trust scientists or not, rather it is that the reality denialists and their shills have so muddied the issue that the general public are accepting an untrue mistaken belief as fact.

When the general public is asked directly if they trust scientists to act in our best interests, the answer is overwhelmingly yes.

I'd rather be condescending and honest about it, then a lying hypocrite.

Plus I thought not being PC and speaking our minds was a good thing in Trump America? Do you need a safe space from all the ugly people, darling?

Your choice. But that can easily turn off some people and they end up ignoring you and you gain nothing from it. Where as just making some good points without the condescending tone can accomplish a lot of good. You choose which you want to accomplish.

As long as you don't wonder why people continue to not side with people who call them stupid for voting differently.

Not really, no. The few times science and politics really get intermeshed is when some political group pushes a counterfactual agenda, like climate change denial. In which case, scientists get pulled in by that opposition. That doesn't mean they're "being political", it means a political group is being counter-factual and scientists are opposing that willful ignorance.

Issues like climate change and vaccination are not scientifically contentious. Scientists aren't taking a political position by pointing out the facts on those issues.

Please stop quoting me. I have told you repeatedly that I will never have a discussion with you. You are engaging in harassment.

The irony of the right & Trump supporters complaining about being called stupid when they love to throw out terms like triggered, snowflake, and "get over it, the election is over," etc etc is quite juicy.

Sorry but trying to understand or make an equal field to those people is a waste of time. Anti vaxxers/climate change denialists/creationists nutjobs should be denounced for their stupidity

    That's a contradiction of sorts.

Going along with climate change denial and anti-vaccine is detrimental to these people, even if they don't realize it. Because, unsurprisingly, people don't always know what's bad for them. No candidate should be able to say in good conscience that they cared about the anti-vaxxers when we get resurgences of diseases which were nearly eradicated. No candidate should be able to say in good conscience that they cared about the deniers when they've got to fund sea walls to protect coastal cities.

@Tijuana When reality deniers try to contaminate science with politics, it's not the fault of the scientists for fighting back politically.

@Mafic People trust scientists. The issue is that deniers have successfully convinced the public that scientists aren't in agreement, even when they actually are. The public thinks that whatever view they've got is what the science says.

They're not stupid for 'voting differently'. They're stupid for who they voted differently for.

What you're saying is we shouldn't judge people who walked off a cliff because they 'simply took a different path". That sounds awfully safe-spacy to me, not being able to criticize mistakes. Why are you so PC?

But he's telling the truth. Sorry but science is not political per se. If some imbecile triest to deny the existence of agw or that vaxxes are safe, a scientist's job is to correct them

By responding to him, you are engaging him in discussion. Feel free to add him to your ignore list (I just checked, you can do it).

If you're so sensitive that you feel someone quoting something posted on a public forum constitutes harassment, I respectfully submit that you might be better off not spending your time on forums in the first place.

Edit: Forgot to post my actual comments... I hope the march accomplishes something, but I don't really expect it to. The people who ignore science on these topics are already ignoring reality, it's too easy for them to spin this as more "evidence" that they're right to do so.

Sorry but if you get mad because you think that AGW is not real, and get called stupid for that, i should add that you're also a special snowflake

Yes, we know that most people don't respond well to the fact that they're wrong. That's why on some days when this topic comes up, I try to tiptoe around it and be tactful.

Other days, it's just tiring to appease people who are really just too god damn prideful to entertain the possibility that they don't know as much as they think they do. Today is one of these days.
