Man ‘sentenced to death for atheism’ in Saudi Arabia

Man identified by local media as Ahmad Al-Shamri, in his 20s, lost two appeals after being arrested on charges of blasphemy for social media videos in which he denounced the Prophet Mohammed

A man in Saudi Arabia has reportedly been sentenced to death on charges of apostasy after losing two appeals. Several local media reports identified the man as Ahmad Al Shamri, in his 20s, from the town of Hafar al-Batin, who first came to the authorities’ attention in 2014 after allegedly uploading videos to social media in which he renounced Islam and the Prophet Mohammed. He was arrested on charges of atheism and blasphemy and held in prison before being convicted by a local court and sentenced to death in February 2015.

At the time Mr Shamri’s defence entered an insanity plea, adding that his client was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of making the videos. He reportedly lost an Appeals Court case, and a Supreme Court ruled against him earlier this week. While news stories in the last few years consistently identify Mr Shamri, his identity or sentencing has not been verified by the Saudi authorities.

Mr Shamri’s name and hometown have trended on Arabic-speaking Twitter in the last few days. Some users have even celebrated his sentencing.

Well in 2000+ years people have demonstrated they cant seperate the 2. So removing is the option i see that will work the best. Since people cannot be trusted to not push thier version of hokuspokus on others then they shouldnt be allowed to have it. The human race will be better off without it.

This is also why migration from countries like the middle East into western countries that aren't lead by theocracy will just not work out, people from those regions are so deeply indoctrinated by things like the cult of Mohammad that many of them see the non theocratic cultures they migrant to as something their faith has to 'cleanse', instead of just integrating into that new society

Seats on the UN councils are divided up by geographical region. There are 13 seats on the council for Asian nations. Saudi Arabi occupies one of those seats. I feel like people are making a bigger deal of them being on the council than it should be. It's not like they have any significant power on the council.

Radical + Ideology does not need stupid book to do stupid things. People do stupids things regardless of religion. Just look at radical antifascist beating up nazis or extreme right-winger beating up black people or whatever.
