Good as a metaphor - worth being built and protected-, meh and with serious complications as a real thing.

That's about the extent of my opinion on it.

Yeah. A fence where he wanted to build a wall. A corporate government where he promised to help the forgotten. Bank managers and not factory jobs.

A military strike against syria where he promised to not mix into the conflict. Well, and a partnership with russia, whos leader probably currently thinks "Shit. SHIT! Never ever i should try a nationalist populist puppet anymore!"

    Yeah. Delivering.

He wants the USA to be more competitive than other countries, unlike Obama.

The wall as Trump has campaigned and described and as his supporters visualize will never happen.

Yeah. Deliviering. By not cancelling NAFTA as he promised. More competetive by raising taxes for steel from germany, as american steel producers cant create quality steel at a competetive price.

    Yeah, competetive.

Is that why he's backed down from China as a currency manipulator, and Canada and Mexico with NAFTA?

Ultimately we are trying to decrease illegal border crossings. In my opinion the goal shouldn't be one huge wall, but a holistic approach where walls are just 1 layer.

Is 'competetive" the opposite to 'protectionistic'?

So, I was listening to Trumps speech. He was discussing the budget and making the "positive" Republican points that Democrats didn't point out. One thing he mentioned was that "allocation for border security was increased, enough to support the down payment on a wall". I quoted that, but it's not exact. He then said, "Even though Democrats didn't point this out". He went on to say, the current wall/fences would be upgraded and fixed as a start.

So, it's an interesting thing. Basically, border security money was increased by billions of dollars. However, as a compromise, it wasn't "allocated" to a specific task. This allows Democrats to say, we did not approve money for a wall, while allowing Trump to say, we got funding for the wall in the budget.

I think competitiveness includes more general internal policy, like we could be more competitive by lowering the minimum wage. Protectionistic always relates to how we defend ourselves from other countries.

Come now, we all knew it was never gonna be a reality.

Sure he might be building a fence but thats a far cry from the wall he promised would be build on Mexico's bill.

Is that why he wanted to cut the U.S. Coast Guard's budget by 12%?

If you're not familiar the Coast Guard currently stops more drugs and illegal immigrants than any other government agency.

Cool, they can go to Europe. That leaves more resources for current citizens.

I hadn't heard him say that. But indeed that would be counter-productive to the goal of border security.
