As much as I feel we should kill Kim Jong-Un, it's just not going to happen. There's big conventions in place that stop nations from killing each other's leaders. It's why we go through huge wars to overthrow leaders instead. We'd kill a million people before we'd put a bullet in an enemy leader's brain.

That won't stop this guy from using every possible way to justify the western world from being the great Satan, though. In his dogma, he is a god to the people of his country. If one of his citizens did make an assassination attempt upon him, that person will definitely be accused of being a foreign agent, as it being a true North Korean goes against the narrative that all North Koreans rightfully agree with and worship Kim Jong-Un.

When has that ever stopped the US? We've found ways to murder democratically elected leaders in Chile, Guatemala, Cuba, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Dominican Republic, etc.

NK's military isn't banging rocks together over there. They have military support from China and Russia. A drone would be spotted and eliminated, and even if it wasn't it would be pretty fucking obvious who was behind the attack.

NK has a hefty payload, including nuclear material if not a fully functioning nuclear explosive, and SK would be hit within seconds of any attack. The population of Seoul is massive (approx 10 million people) and we have several thousands of active US troops stationed there. They would be obliterated in moments.

Not to mention that the US would make instant enemies with China. China doesn't want to see the NK regime toppled because they don't want that kind of instability on their border. Not to mention, as @Caerule noted, Jong-Un is immensely popular in NK. Regime change is not the answer right now.

Thing is, they could probably take him out but they would simultaneously murder most of the senior leadership.

That+a large number of missiles primed for seoul + minor nuclear capabilities and a highly indoctrinated people as well as a very unclear command structure make it an extremely large gamble that it actually pays off.

Even if they were to actually perform a surgical strike on kim yong un only, if it became known that the US is involved it would be unlikely that someone who is more pro-US would come out ahead on the inevitable power struggle.

The only way that the US would actually benefit from assassinating him would be if they have someone they know is pro-us in the current government AND they can reliably edge him into power AND they don't actually get caught.

The first 2 seems pretty improbable given how much of a black box north korea is and the third definately won't be achieved by a drone strike.

Isn't that part of what the CIA does? Clandestine services be clandestine.

The key would be to assassinate him without triggering another World War...

Pretty sure the CIA has a plan to kill just about every world leader. Whether they can succeed is a whole other issue but yeah CIA gonna CIA

    Color me patriotic.
They've successfully done it a number of times. Though they generally do it through coup d'état rather than direct assassinations. The number of countries they've done it to is pretty large. One of the reasons Iran still absolutely hates the US to this day is because we overthrew their democratically elected leader so we could get oil. We did it to Allende in Chile through General Pinochet, though the Chileans don't seem to hold that against the US at this point. We did it to Haiti like a half dozen times.

They even did it with Cuba. That's why Castro came to power in the first place was because the Cubans wanted to get rid of the US controlled leadership.

It'd be more surprising if they didn't have a plan to kill him. Just in case.

(When I googled that I expected to have remembered it from a movie about some wise-cracking assassin. Nope, retired US general.)

What's going to stop the drone, besides the distance from the drone to the remote that controls it? Some half starving soldier with a 1960s rifle?
Bits of drone and/or explosives left behind, that can and will be traced back to the US.

So, the CIA finally updated the assassination plans to him instead of his father. Took them a while it seems.
