Real story: Artist bullied into self-censorship by the real facists: radical "anti-facist" left, the we-know-whats-good-for-you-shut-up-and-take-it crowd. His chosen method of compliance is framed as a virtue signaling attempt to appease them. Someone that understands freedom of expression has to weather bullshit like this to stay relevant would instead be defiant and continue to loudly and openly use their own symbol as they originally intended.

Censorship in the age of the internet is just a routing problem though, the network will use other paths and this character will be around for decades with far more visibility than it ever would have gotten. He basically just gave up any "control" over it.
