Communicating in a thread is a lot more tedious and in comparison.

Tedious? What was tedious about seeing something and responding to it? You realize that same thing happens in Discord chat, right? Someone types something, you respond to it.

For slower moving, public discussions, like p much 99% of forum content it's fine, or even better, but for what the thread often has been way back when, it was clunky and put a lot of unnecessary restrictions and other nonsense in place.

How are PMs not easy here? You mean clicking on someone, clicking to send private message, typing said message, and then hitting send? That wasn't easy? But you're right, in Discord you now have to click someone, type a message, and hit send. Look at how much easier it made things by removing that pesky "send private message" link you had to click, that saves precious seconds in a whole month.

You may call it "killing the thread", but imo, the thread's days were p much numbered anyway and this rejuvenated our group by being a much more appropriate option, to the point where many old faces re-joined.

Fact of the of the matter is that Discord did it. If I was part of that group, which by the way no one has ever put the info out for it nor told me specifically, killing one of your original points, I would still say it killed the thread because that's what it did. Just because I like something doesn't mean I can ignore facts of what it does. If I loved smoking I couldn't just ignore the cancer it causes.

I'm thinking that if a new service pops up and draws the audience away from an older service, maybe it's up to the older one to up its game. This happens in business. If you don't stay competitive, your audience moves away to the one they think is better.
