Depends on what type of Syrians they were, as to whether they tolerated Assad or prospered under him. Most of the Syrians I know are orthodox Christians and have virtually canonised him.

They could literally have walked there, it would have taken about a day, or got there in 45 minutes by car - it is only about 30 miles away - but they took a shitty boat into the open sea on a much longer journey.

Those folks and that boat were fleeing a war zone where there own government was bombing civilians with explosives but chemical weapons as well. They were not heading to someplace where they were guaranteed, such as a red state, but were heading for a refugee camp in Europe where they would live on subsistence rations!

Funnily enough, children can range in ages of between 0 to ~12-16 depending on opinion of when one becomes an adult. They could have easily been born in more peaceful times.
