Will genetic modification allow us to create dragons?

More of a far out concept that I discussed a little with @Theodarzna, but given our advancements like CRISPR-Cas9 and subsequent advances, I imagine it would be feasible for some company to cook up some transgenic beast that superficially resembles a specific mythological creature.

    What do you think?

    1.) Create a dinosaur
3.) Add wings to existing 4 legs
    2.) Make it spit fire

    Done.

Hell, maybe. People who obsess over mythology have already invented rationale like the dragon's mouth being fireproof and having some sort of glands that catalyze the reaction in the throat.

Yes, you won't live to see it though.

There are no dragons with 4 wings.

Well, how many higher developed creatures are equipped with 6 extremities ?

Yeah the six limbed dragons are pretty unlikely as no vertebrae with six limbs has ever survived long out of the womb. A transgenic dragon of the future would probably have to either be bat-like or fully terrestrial.

Insects. Many of them that is.

probably, not the fire breathing variety though.

We are in the early days of genetic manipulation. I believe someday we will master it. We have companies that are trying to turn DNA into code so we can eventually just program a animal in software then hit print.

many mythological dragons are a lot larger then any biological creature could be. Impenetrable scales/armor is unlikely to happen. There is the obvious problem most dragons have that their wings can't carry their weight. And any fire breathing won't be more spectacular then acid/poison spitting creatures. and any real intelligence is a long ways off.

so as long as you don't get your hopes up, sure.

also, outside of a exotic zoo, why would you create a dragon of all things. no way they would be allowed as pets, and the food/litter would be a problem.

There are plenty of people who have extra limbs and have survived just fine.

A transgenic dragon of the future would probably have to either be bat-like or fully terrestrial.
Are you really trying to claim stuff like that on purely hypothetical - fictitious - things? This is exactly what I was saying when we were talking about your threads recently.

Fire spitting/breathing is extremely unlikely. However there are lots of creatures in nature that make use of acid. So if we want to make dragons acid spitting ones would be the way to go.

Ah no that would be no real dragon then.

Probably, but we could do that with breeding. The difference between breeding and genetic engineering is one takes lots of time while the other has immediate results.

I mean. Given enough time we probably could create a creature that looks like a dragon. But I doubt you could ever get a living creature to breathe fire like a dragon.

I also imagine there would be some ethical concerns about trying to create a creature that was known for burning everything alive.

Not gonna lie, since going to Stonehenge as a kid to see all the hippies and druids I've wanted to bioengineer a unicorn just to blow all their fucking minds

And then the dragon to eat the unicorn.
