If the person is a true friend he won't care and will understand. When hes a working colleague he will also understand. If hes none of these 2 types why would you care?

I'll usually say something along the lines of "no thanks, I've had a hectic day just want to relax, but I appreciate the invite" second thing is usually some truth and the last thing I try to send out a compliment.

I've found that saying "I can't make it, but I really appreciate the invite!" works in 99% of the situations. A lot of people offer up excuses or lie and that is unnecessary. People rarely ask you why you can't make it if you tell them you are thankful for the invite.

I'm forcing myself to change the way I say that. Without punctuation, You are saying, (NO thanks) "I give you no thanks" So, i've started saying "No, but thank you".

It's just a nuance that occurred to me after listening to people say it for so long.
