I recently decided to listen to the Septicflesh albums that I haven't listened to yet and today I listened to Revolution DNA for the first time.

Dude that's like their worst album by far.

Have you listened to their best already?


This was released in 1994. Just listen how fucking next level it sounded for that time. A band truly ahead of their time tbh.

Yes.

Though obviously it's a bit harder to do something that hasn't been done when people have been playing metal for, arguably, the last 50 years.

I don't know what it is but greek bands have an incredibly hard time scoring with me.

Greek black metal is as good as it gets and it's a shame that the 90's bands didn't get as big as the Norwegian ones because they weren't as controversial with burning churches or muders etc.




Modern Greek bm is also really great. It always sounds fresh and/or different from the rest of the pack. You can say what you want about them, but they can write some fucking basslines.

I've listened to all of those before and neither of them left much of an impression on me.

That Necromantia album sounds more interesting right now than it did when I last listened to it though. Still not a fan of the synths and vocal production on it though. I'll give the other albums another try as well, just because it's you guys <3

Titan > Communion = The Great Mass >> Revolution DNA > Sumerian Demons

Sumerian Daemons is fucking catchy... Just at some point you've heard all there is to hear on the album.

Both Dead Congregation albums are probably my favorite death metal records of the past decade. If Graves of the Archangels didn't have an overlong intro, we would be talking about one of the best death metal albums of all time. The Teeth Into Red outro alone is jaw-dropping.

Tried all of those except On Thorns I Lay before. All misses.
Google tells me that On Thorns I Lay is a gothic metal band so I won't get my hopes up.

Quick question, how do you feel about Incantation?

Just one of those bands that I feel kind of indifferent about.

I like their general sound but you know that I'm not big on death metal. I listened to Onwards to Golgotha and I gave some of their other albums a try here and there but I don't actually listen to them.

I'll probably check out their upcoming album once it's out though.

I have a question for you too: How can you say that Communion is in Septicflesh's top 5 best albums and then say that The Great Mass and Titan are some of their worst? I think they sound pretty similar overall and they were all released one of the other too.

They sound similar but they lack the tightness of Communion. The Great Mass is decent but Titan is an overproduced soulless mess.

I see, I don't think that the production quality takes away from Titan eve though I also often complain about how overproduced a lot of modern metal is. I thought it was a diverse and overall quite memorable album. I don't like it as much as I did when it came out but I still like to revisit it every now and then.

Communion and The Great Mass have some standout tracks for me and peak higher than Titan but I think Titan is a more consistent experience overall.

If you liked Titan you will may probably love Shade Empire although it's more black metal than death.

I know Shade Empire, but I don't really care about their music. Septicflesh is already kind of an exception for me since I'm usually not big on symphonic metal.

Because
1) this thread is older than 2012, hence it couldn't have been included at the time
2) Rammstein (and, to a lesser extent I suppose, Laibach) already is a thing.
