I'm 35. I don't go to Applebees and TGI Fridays because their quality isn't good enough to justify the prices.

Now, assuming I am not in a hurry(in which case I'll go fast food), why would I go to places like those when there are local, family owned places that are much better at equivalent or cheaper prices? I have a local Thai place owned and run by a family born and raised in Thailand, I have a local family owned burger place that makes the best burgers I've ever had, anywhere, a Greek placed owned and operated by a Greek man...these places have great food, prices equal to or less than the chain places, and being family owned, the workers recognize you, they are friendly, they go out of their way to make sure your experience is good(the burger place I mentioned? They randomly awarded me a $25 gift card solely for being a loyal customer!). If I'm gonna sit down and pay dine in prices, these are the places I'm gonna go, most likely. As far as chain restaurants go, the ones most likely to get my business are Texas Roadhouse(chain or not, they make a mean steak) and Razoos(they're good, and Cajun options are pretty limited around here).

You mean people don't want to spend $5 on a beer, another $10-$15 on some simple-ass food, wait for 30 minutes and then leave a 20% tip because someone carried their food from point A to point B? I'm shocked. Is everyone else shocked? Because I'm shocked.

I go to B-Dubs for half off Tuesdays all the time cause I love wings, and theirs are pretty good.

But the rest of those chains? Yeah, they're going out of business cause their food sucks, is overpriced, and is absolutely terrible for you. Why would I go to Chili's to buy something swimming in butter and grease when I can make most of their food at home, or go to Chipotle and get something fresher, cheaper and faster?

Chains have only themselves to blame. There are plenty of new restaurants that are doing fine.

I don't know if this is the case in the US, but here in my country the TGI chain has not only gradually increased the prices over the last 10 years, but gradually reduced the quality of the food to total shit.

If some time ago the quality of the food was decent and the price was ok - now you have a choice to spend the money there or spend a little more and have a nice dinner in a proper restaurant, that will be much tastier, spend less in a number of small 4-5 table places with a small menu, that will also be tastier, or if you have time - just stop by your local market get some fresh ingridients and cook.

I am not a millenial, I am older, but spending money in a big chain for a shit meal sounds like a bad deal for me either.

Some of it may also be attributed to the massive amount of student debt Millennials hold. I am certain that this has forced many in that generation to be more frugal with their spending. Why go out and spend $60 for a dinner for two, when you can make something similar at home for under $20.

I feel all restaurants are too expensive, but sometimes you want to go out to one. Though it is still too few times to be worth it to keep restaurants. So the only reason to keep them is if they are in a tourist area.

If its disposable its' value is whatever it is worth to the person spending it, now if you find that crap or that doesn't mean the point i made is any less valid.

yeah, the price is fine is the experience, service and food is good, but in most chains 90% of the staff just don't care, so you get sub-par food with shit service, if they want to attract more people they need to either lower their costs or improve their quality. They are usually around the the same price and smaller, family owned places, so i see no reason to eat at lower quality chains, unless you have kids and want to go somewhere your kids can run around and annoy the other guests.

Fast casual chains are not any better. Chipolte and Panera bread are like once in a while for me because I see no point going to either one weekly or daily.

The last time I remember people going daily to fast food establishments was in the mid 90's between Pizza Hut, McDonalds and BK. But those days are lone gone now.

Applebees just sucks, that's why its going out of business.

    Adapt or die.
Agree. Applebees did make an attempt to change their menu, and it was/is decent... ribs, steak, if I'm in the mood for a cheap sit down, that is most definitely going to give me heartburn and/or the shits. Applebees it is.

Buffalo Wild Wings has NEVER appealed to me. I don't think i've ever eaten there. Obviously they have more than buffalo wings, but that doesn't appeal at all. Same could be said about Hooters... famous for their... hot wings (but I don't like hotwings) and since I'm really going to just look at boobs, I'd rather go to a strip club... or look at porn.

Olive Garden for example is really no different than those 2 as far as a quality of food/experience/wait, and they are doing fine. Your business just sucks...

Actually, no. You obviously didn't read the article at all...

It basically said that millennials are more likely to cook at home or eat somewhere quick and cheap. That's not a bad thing and it's actually smart

So it's our fault we don't have money because we eat out once in a while. Now that we don't eat out, it's also our fault that these businesses are having issues.

When is it not our fault?

Either adapt to the market desires or someone else will.

it aint millennials. its menu simplification

Most of the chain restaurants have pared down the menu so much it can be hard to find anything that appeals, . applebees for example use to have a few menu items I liked. all gone. looking at the menu now there's nothing on it that makes me want to go there. and I've seen that at several places I use to enjoy. and usually they keep the smiple/fast to prep items and get rid of good kitchen staff on top of it

places like Buffalo wild wings I suspect is loosing more of the sports bar people to local brewery/craft beer pubs atleast that would be my guess around here. and the decreased interest in sports in general
