I feel like game developers have started acting more and more like Vegas casino sharks and the gaming community is just completely hooked on it. People will refuse to play games flatly on the basis of them not giving out loot or something, and then play other games that are barely even "played" at all just because they give out shinies left and right.
So, mention one game which is played without any form of progression and/or rewards?

To me, WoW is fun due to mechanics, story, environment, immersion. Other games, have been fun for those same reasons, but I can't mention a single game I've played which wasn't about pursuing something, some sort of reward, some end goal which made you want to stick and keep progressing.

Guild Wars 2 fell off the moment they charged a shit load for the expansion.

Honestly I like both control schemes in their own way, I don't think one controls any worse than the other, they just have a feel uniquely fitted to the game play styles of each respective game.

Considering that GW2 is a B2P game, You still had it cheaper than WoW for instance, that charges 50$ for expac and monthly fee on top of that, so be objective in that case.

In the end they can't achieve anything different from the player using controls to make things happen in-game.

And what game is "fun" to play without also having rewards to pursue or some form of progression? Even PONG had the whole competition bit...
There are rewards and competition, even they're not necessarily what you are after.

Well i agree that the HoT was too expensive with its initial content, but over the time they added a lot of it with LS3, if we consider LS3 as a part of HoT expac the price gets more real. If they went for 40$ it would be perfect, we will see how will they price their next expac.

Just when I was thinking of coming back to play as a filler game I read the thread and it's 90% of people shitting on the game. RIP.

So are you saying I get access to all of LS3 and don't have to pay for it then?

If You log in when the LS part is up, yes You get it for free .

    .

So you will play said games without ever progressing in some shape or form? Even chess is about outsmarting your opponent, ever tried playing chess with yourself? Oh yes, moving them pawns around without any end goal is so much fun!

Sorry, but I strongly disagree with your sentiment that MMORPGs aren't simply fun to play when 99% of people play for example WoW without EVER doing anything but just play the game for their own reasons and by their own tune. "Addictive elements as a crutch" sounds clever and all, but the matter of the fact is that the vast majority of people play games on a casual level no matter what the game is. And one can assume that they play said games because they have fun doing so.

When I first got into WoW, I had no idea about rewards, or long-term goals. I just felt the urge to continue playing and seeing the world, the feel of the game and exploring. I wouldn't have played for 9 years simply over "addictive elements". In fact, the times that I didn't enjoy the game enough (during Cata mostly) I was able to play something else without second thought, yet addiction runs in the family.

People play chess solo all the time... to come up with techniques and strats for when against a real person.

(I'm sure you'll try equating that to "WoW without loot or something" and make me feel very sad)
Exactly, you play chess with the end goal of beating someone through your play, no matter how subtle. Playing for yourself counts as practice, not actually playing it "for the fun!".

You can try and deflect all you like through questioning my intellect and pretending you have the authority to hand out "clever awards" like a petulant child. The matter of the FACT is that games tend to have rewards and goals of some sort, but you stay because you have FUN playing.

You not having fun playing MMORPGs =/= them lacking fun for people having fun playing them.

Don't let people on this website influence you. Just play the game, doesn't hurt to try it again. They only thing it costs you is time.

I played WoW for several years and thought it was great, but eventually I stopped. Soon after GW2 released, so I started playing that (and have been since). But a couple years ago I went back to try WoW out for a bit during MoP, and it just felt terrible. I quested for a while and ran some dungeons and it just felt clunky, my character felt "floaty", and by god did the animations make the experience feel jarringly unresponsive.

I think a part of it might be what you get used to, or at least is more a matter of perception then objective fact.

Anyone else have problems with account security with this game? That's why I quit playing. Haven't had a problem with any other game but this one. My account was compromised 3 times. I know at least one (possibly two) it was locked down because of some nonsense about people able to log into random people's accounts. It got locked for "crude language". I find it odd that this one game of all my years of gaming, is the one that just can't be kept secure. I think I'm pretty good with my passwords and where I am entering information for things. However I know with shit like the one I mentioned I have zero control over. That is why I don't play this game anymore. Last time it got locked I just said fuck it and walked away. I was tired of jumping through their hoops from shit security to regain control over something I payed for.

I seem to recall them saying that they made back their investment from pre-orders alone.

Should probably double check that though.

I was one of the last people in my group to be playing GW2, including someone who worked on it professionally, and even I haven't touched it in over a year.
Soothing Mist:"Healing them for a minor amount every 0.5 sec, until you take any other action."
Jade Serpent Statue: "The statue will also begin casting Soothing Mist on your target. healing for 50% as much as yours. "
    [What's half of minor?]
"Statue casts Soothing Mist at a nearby ally for toddler healing."

Personally I have nothing but major love for gw2. My problem with the game is I don't juggle 2 MMOs at a time well. Since most of my pals play WoW it ends up winning out.
