I see people constantly saying "FF14 is an MMORPG, but WoW isn't" Yet I do the same thing in both fucking games.

Can someone explain something FF14 does that WoW doesn't currently which makes it an MMORPG and WoW not?

The difference is that FFXIV facilitates many different playstyles and interests. You can play FFXIV just like WoW (no shit) but I know people who barely play endgame content at all and sit on mountains of gil through crafting or gathering and treat it as their endgame. There are also people who only play for the story, or people who simply do "mid-core" content as eventually it can catch you up with even the endgame raiders and still have a lot of stuff to do. Stuff like unique 24 player raids have no equivalent in WoW. Stuff like 8-person hardcore raiding has no equivalent in WoW.

Genres come and go, gaming is still a relatively new concept (generationally speaking) and the young who don't like it right now may come around later as they get older.

Use logic. WoW and Final Fantasy are very similar games with same payment model. We can safely estimate that WoW have something around 5-7 million subs at this time of expansion lifetime (we don't know, but FFXIV also don't know that). And now look for example:

- look at Twitch - right now WoW have 11.000 viewers, FFXIV have 1.200,

- look at Youtube - FFXIV trailer videos from official channel have usually 100.000 views, there are exceptions with over 500.000 views; on WoW channel videos easily reach million; Anduin cinematic have already 500k after 3 weeks and 7.2 cinematic from few months have over 2 million views.

- look how active are forums in both games; in WoW even single mistake or inconvinience create massive uproar - you think it's coming from people that don't play the game?

These examples are not proofs, but tell us something about popularity of the game.

Also biggest thing: if Final Fantasy would have number of active subscribers even close to WoW, do you think they would put vague line in trailer or rather put official statement: "Final Fantasy XIV have over 6 million active subs right now. Thank you for support."

I'm not telling if one game is better than other by the way.

Subscribing = Creating an account (by buying it) and paying for gametime

So, a subs is an account with active gametime.

With good reason, it's honestly the only game I'd pay a sub for again. I stopped when I ran out of story to jump into other games but damn the story after the ARR was really good, I was freaking out.
