At a guess, Mueller had this leaked to inoculate him against attacks by the president on the investigation. He can still juggle deputy attorney general's to remove Mueller, but that act would be more damning than nearly anything Mueller can produce

That remains to be seen. Republicans aren't super into Trump right now either.

Congressional Republicans are pissed at Trump throwing their version of Trumpcare under the bus, apparently. But honestly...there will need to be extremely damning evidence, and Trump will need to engage in far worse behavior before they turn on him. If they had an ounce of patriotism left in them, they already would have. These are the same people excusing his idiocy because "He's new at this." as if that's an acceptable excuse.

Yeah they're not thrilled with him now, and many are definitely keeping him at arms-length, but given the behavior of the GOP since November, it's getting harder and harder to expect those elected representatives to put country ahead of party.

Maybe Mr. "Only I Can Fix It" who literally had a health care plan on his literal campaign website should have tried harder. He did nothing but outsource the job to Ryan, put his weight behind it, force them to vote before the CBO report, watch as the Senate ditched the whole thing and wrote a new one from scratch, and when he saw the tide turning against that big thing he promised, he promised his voters SOOOOOOOOOOOO HARD turn to Arizona snow, he flip-flopped yet again, said it was heartless, and stabbed 217 people in the back.

Did the GOP actually expect some kind of loyalty from someone who has to be dragged into court to fulfill his contractual obligations? Did they expect Mr. 42% Unemployment, Obama is a Muslim Kenyan, Let's Steal Children's Cancer Charity Funds to follow some kind of standard moral or ethical principles? Did they actually think Mr. NRA, Mr. The Second Amendment People Can Do Something About It, Mr. I'll Pay Your Legal Fees If You Punch A Protestor, Mr. Carried Out On A Stretcher, Mr. I Will Accept The Results If I Win, who became Mr. The Democrats Are Responsible For Inciting Political Gun Violence By Pointing Out That Stuff I Did, would somehow stand behind what he did and take even the barest scrap of personal fucking responsibility? Did they not see themselves being discarded the second, the second they chose to put anything at all over Trump's demented self-interests?

I hope the Congressional Republicans are angry. I hope they're furious, I hope they're fucking livid. But if they didn't see crap like this coming miles away, they deserve what happens in 2018.

Oh, I totally agree. They made their bed, and now they're getting fucked by Trump and they have to smile all the while. If they expected him to play by any of the established rules or norms in Washington, then they're far dumber than even I give them credit for.

They deserve every painful, agonizing second of this.

It's not even norms of Washington. It's basic professional ethics, personal ethics, or even being a decent human being. 217 people in a varying spectrum of risk put their weight behind what Trump said he wanted, and has Spicer even said "what he meant was" about this yet? Where's the usual damage control? Is the WH not even pretending to defend him anymore? Huckabee-Sanders? Mattis? A janitor behind the podium role-playing? Or are they just admitting via silence they no longer care that they're being led by a narcissist used car salesman who has no fucking clue what he's doing?

He couldn't even give a "Our thoughts and prayers are with him" speech without wandering into "I called this and it's the Democrats' fault".

You do know that anonymous sources took down Nixon right? Ever hear of "Deep Throat"? Not the porn act, but the anonymous source. Do you know how long it took to actually learn that person's name? 30 fucking years. They still took down Nixon.

I think most of them would rather ride Pence's ass for that, but they know they're toast, electorally speaking, if they turn on Trump at this point.

OT: Interesting (and exhilarating) development, but I wouldn't expect anything to move forward for some time. This isn't an episode of a sit-com, it's Wagner's fucking Ring cycle.

So I've thought about this tonight.

Just my 2 cents, given the timing of the Mueller potential-firing story the last two days, this looks like a big "back the fuck off" official-unofficial leak by the investigation.

This investigation has been going on since the days after the Comey firing. That was well over a month ago now? Maybe 6 weeks?

This had plenty of time to leak. It leaked now. It leaked so early that they haven't even conducted some of the major interviews they intend to yet.

Based on the timing, this is probably the motive.
