Every officer from that ship needs to be fired asap. Same for anyone who worked directly under them.

Let the navy and whoever owns the cargo ship figure this out.

Obviously none of us where there or saw it happen. Yet we are so quick to put out our judgement.

Seems like a lot of people on both ships would have to not be paying attention for this to happen.

I was reading an article earlier about them locating the remains, sad, but at least there is the small comfort of a funeral. The article refered to the incident as the navy hitting the cargo ship, which maybe it's just semantics, but obviously the navy didn't move sideways into the front of the other ship. I understand right of way and inertia, not like these ships can stop on a dime, but even if the navy ship is at fault they were hit, they didn't hit.

For myself, I just always had this idea that we were protective enough of our ships that they wouldn't allow another ship close. Even if this IS an accident, it's easy enough to see a terrorist using this tactic and I'd think there would be even more restrictions to prevent this than a "normal" ship.

Meh, it IS a discussion board, and it's not like any of us are on the investigative team trying to get outside opinions. Pretty sure they won't be calling any of us up for our expert opinion and nothing of what we say influences the world outside of this thread.

Can't dodge a container ship but is supposed to dodge a swarm of missiles?

Years ago I heard a joke from some celeb about being in the bathroom and a more famous star was in the next stall and began talking. They thought to them, replied, back and forth, then the other celeb says "hey let me put you on hold, someone is talking to me from the other stall".

But, I mean, I've heard the same joke from 3-4 different folks, all saying it happened to them, personally. I mean, I guess it's possible, but most likely people want to personalize things.

No actually, it is supposed to shoot them down.

Hopefully the results of the investigation will become public.

Its a good thing they are only used for harrasing goat farmers and skinny pirates. Any real conflict breaks out 300 odd highly trained specialists (and some cooks) will go from surface fleet to submariners in the blink of an eye.

The US has not lost a warship to enemy action since 1945.

That's one weird way in delivering justice to the unsuspecting container ship.

It sounds like the container ship unexpectedly did a 180 and that caused the collision, or at least that's what the Navy is blaming it on.

But that said, I really do not understand how a destroyer collides with a slow moving container ship. The destroyer is much faster and should be much more nimble than the container ship, and the destroyer has radar and sensors out the wazoo. It definitely seems like a pretty major dereliction of duty by someone to not avoid it. You can pretty much guarantee the captain will be removed even if he wasn't on the bridge at the time, and others will probably get reprimanded as well.

The cargo ship was moving at 14kts, the Fitz would likely had been only using 2 engines (out of 4), which would lower her ability to accelerate and decelerate. Both ships were equipped with surface search radars (most of the destroyer's radars and sensors are for air warfare, not close range navigation).

Argentina, UK, Iran, South Korea, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Israel, Egypt, India, and Pakistan have all lost warships to hostile action since 1945. The US has had several damaged, but none have been lost.

Perhaps they got a little confused trying to follow the Trump maritime navigation policy - if he says head north, you steer south.
