Many people consider the feeling of doing a good deed to be a satisfying reward, but let's be real here, that's in your head and not physical. If you had kept the $5 instead you would have something substantial to show for it, not some feel-good bullshit your mind makes up.

That's me playing devil's advocate, by the way. I would have returned the $5 too, though I would say that 99% (randomly made up statistic) of the time, you stand to gain more when you don't be a nice person. Anything in life that has to do with advancement tend to favor people who look out for themselves over others.
