Gameplay wise, Kel Thuzad in Naxxramas, the final raid.

Lore wise? Not sure. Vanilla was kind of all over the place.

Vanilla served as an appetizer of the forces that would be eventually explored further. Kel'thuzad served as the strongest raid boss, but lore-wise it's not clear. Perhaps C'Thun, as he was the strongest (in lore) out of all the other big baddies. Aside from C'Thun, all the other raid end bosses resurrected in future expansions, unlike most other expansion-centric bad guys.
3 hints to surviving MMO-C forums:
1.) If you have an opinion, someone will say that it is wrong
2.) If you have a source, there will be people who refuse to believe it
3.) If you use logic, it will be largely ignored
btw: Spires of Arak = Arakkoa.

Kel'thuzad was the final raid boss released during Vanilla, as he was the final boss of Naxx.

That said, vanilla didn't have a massive linear story arc like we do now with clear main and secondary villains. Onyxia was the final boss of the Stormwind civil war arc (defias and all that), Ragnaros for the bronzebeards vs dark iron story arc. Neferian for the dark horde, which were mainly enemies for stormwind as Neferian allied himself with his sister Onyxia.

Hakkar the Soulflayer for all the troll stuff in Strangethorn vale, swamp of sorrows and even hinterlands as some trolls there were loyal to Hakkar. The main clan had one his eggs which one of his followers uses to bring Hakkar back into the world at Zul'gurub. We actually helped him do that by infusing the egg with the essence from Hakkars Avatar within the Temple of Atal'hakkar. Within the Temple, we do see a link between Hakkar and the emerald nightmare, as the green dragons within were corrupted by the nightmare via Hakkars blood. This gets carried over with cata, even after the nightmare lore in Stormrage. After Chronicles though, who knows if Hakkar still has a connection or not. It is never really talked about outside of the temple of Atal'hakkars lore. Other than Hakkar and Ysera have some history.

C'thun for the sithilid shit in central and southern Kalimdor.

Basically if you had to put someone as the end boss of Vanilla, the logical choice would be Kel'thuzad, as naxx was the last raid released, even though the scourge were mostly isolated to 3 zones. Trisfal glades and the western / eastern plaguelands.

In vanilla shit just happened with no type of order what so ever. Shit flew at us from all over the place. None of the bads had any real connections at all. Most were just setting up future stories. IE, Black Dragons, Old Gods, LK, Elemental gods ect.

Vanilla was the raw adventure, the journey where you "found" yourself.

Which is why I miss it. Game is comparatively completely on rails now.

They essentially was not. All four raids were essentially separate story lines.

What? The raid structure of Vanilla was pretty linear, dude.

    Ragnaros: Tier 1
    Nefarian: Tier 2
    C'Thun: Tier 2.5
    Kel'Thuzad: Tier 3

No, Blizzard just got better at telling a coherent story. It still might not be a story that's everyone's cup of tea, but Vanilla was just all over the place compared to what came later (from TBC on).

The raid structure itself was entirely linear and very clear.

In terms of raid structure Kel'Thuzad

in terms of lore there was no finall boss or no real "big bad gay" , Vanilla was simple "this is world ,deal with it"

You either die a Varian, or live long enough to see yourself become a Thrall...

Seriously, the UI looks almost exactly the same now as 10 years ago.

Another video confirming how vanilla wow was boring and had low skill floor on pve. This mages does literally shit entire fight ( just used some random frost bolt and arcane blasts ) and still kills the end boss of a raid tier. His active time in this fight was like 50%.

The difficult of those bosses was the gear requirement, but playerskill wise ... it was braindead easy.

I don't feel they became any better. They became more cinematic, and switched the style from a sandbox world where you live and things happens to an overarching story which dominate everything, but I don't think the latter is actually more interesting than the former.
Vanilla felt full of things happening everywhere, and a living world where you could see from where the threats originated. It felt more natural.

To be fair, if you look closely, you can see that the one playing is level 70. So this was recorded during TBC, not during classic. They aren't even a full raid group here.

As others have said, from a raiding perspective, Kel'thuzad was the final boss, from a lore standpoint there wasn't really one.
