What the Founders had in mind when they protected free speech and free expression are exactly this sort of action. Many European states at the time had laws against disrespect towards the crown or the country which could be applied exceedingly broadly. They wanted no such law to ever take root in America. Freedom of expression and speech includes being a fucking idiot.

However, I don't quite understand how she's making this out to be a freedom of speech thing; the government is not prosecuting her, she's getting backlash for doing something that many people found offensive. Thing is in this day and age unless the police is gonna arrest every fucking asshole who threatens you then its best to just not do these sort of things unless you are prepared for the fall out.

Noone is disputing that threatening to kill her is wrong but in the real world there aint much the police can do unless they come to your door and also AFAIK telling someones employer about something isnt a crime.

I don't find this compelling. While the guy does quite literally exist, I think what most people are actually respecting to isn't sacredness or tradition so much as open contempt for their country. The tenor of a display frequently matters about as much as the actual content there of.

I agree partially Chrysia, but shouldnt this need refinement? I mean of course freedom of speech keeps corruption away, encourages growth and finally makes justice happen. But then part of justice and anti corruption is people also being answerable for their actions no? For example, sure death threats and such are totally wrong, no argument there, but if someone said "get out of my resturant we dont serve you because you are the lady that disrespected our flag" would they be within their right to do so as they are also freely expressing them?

I feel like freedom of speech is always used as an umbrella to hide behind or a weapon to attack with, far more than using it to progress or better us. In the current scenario isnt this a huge slippery slope? I mean we should want to be better but being better means if we screw up then consequences are present as a signal "dont do that again, thats stupid".

There will always be two kinds of people in this though. Like @Coombs , you and I and many others who would just shake our head and ignore her attention seeking. But just as we are present, so is the other side, the one that will threaten or react violently. But arent we doing the same thing? excusing her bullshit due to x y z.

With her actions, it shouldnt come as news to her that three parties of people exist. 1. that agrees with her 2. ones that would react violently 3. ones who would keep their distance and ignore her. This will forever be the case.

All we as people can hope that the people in block 3 (ignore, keep distance and move along) are more numerous than 1 and 2.
