Shows like Monty Python, Are you Being Served, Benny Hill, Hale & Pace, The Kenny Everett Video Show and the Carry On movies to name but a few more were and are still good because they came at a time when people were not so uptight as they are today and you could get away with things that today would get a show cancelled faster than a Nascar race..

Heck was watching an old TMZ episode and one of the hosts asked the other would a movie like Blazing Saddles be made and the response was no way never not ever, because of political correctness and so on..

I noticed that some British sitcoms that are allowed to run for too long tend to become horribly repetitive. Some examples include: Allo Allo, Only Fools and Horses, and Last of the Summer Wine. They start relying on the same jokes and set pieces from episode to episode, which becomes annoying after a while.

There have been many good comedies suggested here:
Blackadder is brilliant and offers smart humour.
    Fawlty Towers is timeless.
One Foot in the Grave, I don't believe more people haven't suggested it.
Are You Being Served? is brilliant, but loses some of its quality when Mr Grainger and Mr Lucas are replaced.
The Vicar of Dibley is really good too. Some of the villagers are unforgettable.

I also didn't see anybody suggest Jeeves and Wooster.

On the other hand I didn't enjoy Father Ted or A Bit of Fry and Laurie. These two I just didn't find funny at all.

I liked Frasier. Still enjoy watching the reruns. Niles char was very funny. But then again, I have not seen any British humor I do like. But humor is something which is like art and music. A lot of different tastes.

Appartently it has a fair amount of positive reviews on IMDB. Who finds this torture funny? Eric doesn't seem like he deserves it, and it's very mean spirited.
A list of good british comedy

    Only Fools and Horses

    Blackadder
My Family < Written by americans
    Absolutely Fabulous
    Father Ted

    Men Behaving Badly
    Open All Hours
    Little Britain
    The Office
    Porridge
    The Two Ronnies
    Red Dwarf
    The Royle Family
    The Vicar Of Dibley
    The Catherine Tate Show
    Monty Python

I and many others who are British have never even heard of stressed Eric.

All those comedies i mentioned have left its mark of British TV. Stressed Eric did not. Just by watching that clip for 2 minutes i see it was on BBC Choice, which wasn't a very well watched channel until it got replaced by BBC Three.

What you have to remember though is British and American comedy are very different. Lots of Americans do not understand our humour, and lots of British do not like nor understand American humour. Me as an example, i cannot stand any American non animated sitcom other than The Middle, Fraiser and sometimes Cheers and Two and a half men. Everything else i struggle to laugh at. Friends, Big Bang Theory, The American Office, Modern Family (especially), How i met your mother etc. I could sit down and watch 10 episodes of every American sitcom and not raise a single smile whereas with any episode of the British comedies i listed id be laughing within 3 minutes.

Frasier was absolutely hilarious, the fans who felt that it was too high brow for others to understand were even funnier because they absolutely didn't get it.
