I got linked to a particularly awful metal song last night. Couldn't tell if it was by a legitimate band that the guy genuinely thought was good, or if it was a joke band and the guy was just trying to pull my leg.
The reports of my death were surprisingly well-sourced and accurate.

you sound like any old person who thinks pop-top 100 is the only music that exists, not to mention good music is veeeeeery subjective

Oh? What do you consider good music?

  6. #66
You just think the shit you like is better than the shit other people like, OP.

I am sure you are the first person in history to have this notion.

Only the good things are remembered. You only get to experience the rest when it's new.

You're right though, most of the new stuff is terrible. What you're glossing over is that most of the old stuff is terrible too, you don't haven't been exposed to it.

Lot of stuff these days are industry-pushed garbage. To find the quality material you have to go underground, or visit small venues where no-name bands play original stuff.
I remember when an acquaintance of mine had me listen to "Grey-eyed Glances" back in the late 90s. They were a group that didn't really push themselves to be heard and only did gigs in small local venues. They weren't a bad group then...

You never stopped expecting it to be spoonfed to you would be my guess.

Good music still exists. If you expect to just turn on the radio and experience the best of what's out there, of course you're going to think that the entire medium has fallen off a cliff. You as a listener need to dig for it, and as there's less incentive than ever for artists to actually pursue music as a career, fewer acts get themselves into a position where they can focus completely on the medium over a long term.

Lots to blame for that, and lots of responsible parties refuse to believe that they're part of the problem, but that's how it is.

Get spotify, browse the near endless amount of new music out there.

I'm not saying get spotify then click on top 40 hits, go and browse as many genres as you can.

I've got Spotify and several other streaming services. I'm more interested in what other people, in particular, people in their late teens early twenties, think is good current music.

You're reading my question wrong. I'm not looking to find new music that I consider good. I'm curious what the younger generation currently thinks is good music.

To speak to your comment about being "silly": do people not find new music through the suggestions of other people these days? Seems like a pretty standard thing regardless of age. I've certainly stumbled on plenty of good music over the years but far more often someone exposed me to something that I was not yet familiar with.

Granted, you're not the first, and you certainly won't be the last, person on the internet to be "judgy" rather than speak to the conversation.

You have to look for the music to find it, if you don't like whats in top 40-100 its not going to fall into your lap, nor will just random facebook links.

A brief list of some albums i would in my own opinion, because music is opinion, consider good.

    Sufjan Stevens- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nm1CchiM2k

    Sorority Noise- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on4k_pQW5N0

    Joey Badass- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYgarGQnfJ4

    Aesop Rock- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQF6x_FgnJ0

Kendrick Lamar- Cant find a full album youtube link so here is just a good Kendrick Lamar song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-48u_uWMHY

Radiohead- Still doing good stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI2o...LR1HaHEzf_DUr9

    Modern Baseball- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7epIb-wWP7A

    Frank Ocean- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tT32VTll5M

I have a top 50 albums of the year list somewhere if you want more links.

There's good music today, you just have to look for it, rather than relying on the radio to bring it to you.

I had a conversation with someone about this. I had come up with the theory that we don't have that great musician of the new century. The closest we might come to is Lindsey Sterling. Musician in the way I am talking about is someone who can play an instrument like no other. We have one exceptional vocalist in Adele. Sure we have a lot of great entertainers, but very few great individuals.

This is what has been the consumption of mainstream music for a long time. I mean, Dave Grohl, Tom Morello, Slash and Carlos Santana are still around. But the current generation hasn't produced anyone to replace them.

I do enjoy hip hop and EDM as well. But both of those genres require a catchy beat.

Plenty of great stuff out there, but if you're looking for it on the Top 40 charts you're going to be disappointed. Dig around a little bit and you might be surprised at what you find.
