A petition in Bradenton, Fla., is calling for a memorial to Confederate veterans to be replaced with a statue of beloved Snooty the manatee, who died in a tragic tank accident at the weekend only days after celebrating his 69th birthday.

Local media reports that thousands have signed the petition, which is the brainchild of local a resident.

Give him his own statue, stop trying to erase history.

I'd rather plaques be added to statues erected to honour causes/people that are frowned upon today, because that way they serve as a reminder of what happened while still denouncing the bad stuff. HOWEVER! A statue for a 69 year old Manatee with such an adorable name as Snooty is clearly well deserved and should totally exist for sheer adorableness. Don't care if they move and replace the other statue with it because "awwwwwwwww" <3

You might be able to purchase it and move it to your town. Some people might be into monuments for traitors that support slavery, ironically. Having in the town square might be the wrong message.

A local school teacher bought a Lenin statue for cheap in the 1990's. It's a great place to meet friends, "I'm next to the Lenin Statue". You could totally be like, "meet me by the statue for the states rights err slavery guys."
