You talk about resist gear? guess what, ONLY raiders needed to worry about that... and most people were not raiders. The OP doesnt seem to be either.

Whats wrong with you? you really think people needed resist gear while leveling and doing max level pvp or dungeons? no, you never needed to do that...

You are laughing by being clueless, im afraid.
except BC did have time gating

Not complaining myself, but I defend anyone's right to have a little whinge that they feel they need to spend more time doign the parts of the game they dont enjoy so much - in order to get to the bits they do. Personally, I just take it as it comes - but It is occasionally frustrating.

Not to mention attunments which really gated content behind time.

not really, i stopped playing when firelands came out, and started again week before legion launched, not doing mythic raids but doing heroic ToS pretty well

I am in the same position, I don't blame Blizzard though as the majority of people whine that there isnt enough to do, now there is just too much to do, It's always going to be hard to find the balance.

Back in Vanilla - WotLK I wouldn't be as bothered by it, because those were times when I had a very carefree lifestyle, I didn't have a long full time job, I was working minimal hours back then and sometimes would play WoW 24 hours non stop on my days off, now I am older and even on my days off I am too busy for WoW. Logging on, doing a few dailies and saying hello to my guild is all I can manage now lol.

I used to be a super hardcore raider but quit around mid cataclysm, half way through the firelands raid. I came back again during the end of MoP but it from from then on that I wasnt playing like I used to...

If there is nothing to do people will get bored, there will be no glue to keep them playing. On the other hand if there is too much to do the game feels like a drag. Its so tricky to find a good balance in between.

I totally agree, even though legion was/is great to play, its not much friendly for returning players since they have so much to catch up.

You said you can have a character maxed out within a week with minimal effort. That is simply wrong.

Care to explain? From launch until now my DK has 5 days 19 hours and 15 mins played at 110. A lot of that is sitting in Dalaran screwing around with transmog or talking to guildies that I left behind. He has 3 legendaries. A 902 ilevel. And 2 artifacts almost at 52.

The difference is that you only farmed resist gear if you raided. OP is talking about all of the stuff you have to do in order to do open world stuff.

However, I did it when I started. Yes, some of it's annoying on your first toon since AK is slow, etc. But you get AP when you're questing through things and doing the suramar stuff for the first time. Flight is relatively easy to get (2-3 weeks). So, while I agree some of the stuff is boring, esp the class hall missions, it's not THAT bad. Now, doing it a second, third, tenth time? More annoying, but you get AK boosts, so less actual work/time.

I hope you're not suggesting that 139 hours played is "minimal effort"...

I suspect most people wouldn't consider that "minimal effort."

    1) That is less than a week.
    2) That was all done pre 7.2.5 and mostly done in 7.1 ish. So it is much easier now.
    3) Artifact levels take 5 hours to do now per level vs the 5 days it was for my DK so that would have been a lot of time saved.

No expansion has EVER given you the option to be fully geared in less time than that, I feel like.

If you want a chest piece in Legion, you grinded for the chest piece OR Warforged OR socket OR War+Socket OR Titanforged OR TF+Socket.

So if i want TF+Socket, i need to grind endlessly, praying for RNG to drop the chest + praying for RNG to drop the chest AND TF+Socket whereas in Vanilla, i just had to hope for good RNG to drop the chest.

There is no set path towards your goal, when you finally put in the work, grinding like a mad man, you get RNG on top of RNG.

I wanted my mage bracers, so i did content, all of it, to increase my bad luck protection. Prior to 7.1.5, i saved up 50+ emissary boxes, did tons of m+, ran every LFR/normal/heroic EN, did i grind content? Sure, did i get my bracers after all that? Nope. This was what eventually wore me down, grinding for a chance at a Legendary only to get one you don't even want. Eventually, i got 12 legendaries, finally getting my bracers but i realised frost mages were better, so i grinded again, got my ring and magtheridon only to realise, i need to grind my relics as well.

I go to a casino, play the slot machine, i put in a coin, machine spins, i win or i don't, that's vanilla.

I go to a casino, play the slot machine, i put in a coin, it may or may not give me 1 credit, if i manage to spin it, it may or may not register my spin, if it does spin, i may or may not win. Welcome to Legion.

But yeah, brush me off as a "OMG I DONT WANNA GRIND I WANT ALL MY REWARDS WHEN I LOGIN" player.
RNG is RNG and has been since the beginning of the concept (long before Vanilla, long before Warcraft). If you hate RNG so bad perhaps you should come up with a different system and try and convince the devs that your system is better. (guess what, it wont be).

which most people would read as a calendar week. But when challenged about this you then tried to give the impression you meant a week played, giving your own example of 139 hours as evidence of 'minimal effort', something which most normal people would find laughable.

Vanilla player: i wish this game was hard and actually took effort

vanilla players still: i quit because it was too much effort to get back into it.

    "Classic grinding had MEANING!"

    "Legion grinding is STUPID!!"

Meanwhile, the grinds of Classic came down to developers being n00bs rather than some clever strategy and game design. Legion's "grinds" are about as well thought out as they come and the AP "grind" for example comes naturally from just playing the game. But I suppose we're on a fan forum for people bitching about having to play a game to progress in a game that they don't want to play.

Wanna know what a grind is? Grind those damned dusts needed for the dark talbuk mounts.

And no, Legion is not unfriendly in any shape or form. It has the most generous catch-up mechanics of any previous iteration of the game.
