Suggest my updates on my many year old build!

    So I currently have:

    MOBO: Asus P8P67 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard ** B3 REVISION **
    CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 @ 4.3 @4.7Ghz
CPU Fan: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler Hyrdo H80
    GPU: MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 Twin FrozR II 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express @ 810MHz/1250MHz - Default AMD 390
SSD: Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive
    HDD: Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache
PSU: Seasonic X-Series 650w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
    Case: Antec 300 - it's kinda old
    Monitor: 2560x1440

Uk sites acceptable, I know there is a bit I can reuse in here, I've not been keeping up to date with tech recently and am starting to struggle in some newer games so looking at what I'd need to throw into this to make it current again

Dont get those, which ones do you have?

What are you playing and what kind of performance you're looking for?

Those are parts that I've previously upgraded, sorry I should have been more clear. Red is old parts, and I've listed what I've previously upgraded them to next to it. I play a lot of games, Company of Heroes 2, Homefront 2, Windward, Tropico 5, Total War games, it's very varied. I'd also like the ability to stream, should I choose to.

What is your budget and what kind of performance you're aiming for? (settings preset, FPS threshold, etc).

Budget isn't overly important, I don't want to spend more than I need to but I don't wanna cheap out on stuff. I'd just like to be able to play most things on high settings, ultra isn't important and multitask decently. Atm I get huge FPS drop when mutlitasking, probably old CPU + lowish ram causing that.

Choose away. 7700K will give you the best performance for a pure gaming PC. R7 will lose by about 5-10% but bring much better mixed workload performance. GTX 1080Ti is an option here (it is about 30-35% faster than a 1080) but I believe you should be fine with 1080 (if you plan on switching to 4K I suggest seriously looking into 1080Ti). Your PSU is absolutely fine still and should be enough to power your next build. You can also skip buying a bigger AIO for now, look how well your H80 holds up. If you're going for an overclock (and it looks by your previous build that you are) I suggest getting it right away. Not including a HDD here, not sure if you need it, if the budget is not really an issue for you I suggest getting a bigger SATA SSD for data/games (look at Western Digital/Sandisk X400/Crucial MX300).

Thanks for the builds Thunder, one question though, the 390 is still reasonably new(ish), would upgrading it provide me with notable performance increase? I know at the moment my CPU is more of a bottleneck than my GPU. Would upgrading reverse that affect and a newer CPU would bottleneck my performance due to an older GPU?

Yes, mostly due to the fact that you're running 1440p. I dont think your CPU is a bottleneck, my guess would be between VRAM and RAM. Obviously you could use more CPU power aswell.

The 390 has 8gb VRAM so really shouldn't be a bottle neck for 1440p, I wouldn't have thought? As the 1080 you've suggested also has 8gb VRAM

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1747?vs=1714 So clearly the 1080 is benched vastly higher than the 390, however both are 8gb vram what's the difference, 1080 just has a higher core clock?

'Company of Heroes 2, Homefront 2, Windward, Tropico 5, Total War games'

Hold on, the AMD 390 is the bottleneck in these games?

Yeah I question the 390 because I have a Logitech g510 and on the screen I see my CPU and RAM usage and they both get into the high 90% when running some games so I know they're being stretched but have nothing monitoring my GPU usage.

It is more of a question to the poster, the 390 has no issues running those games if im honest, its still a powerful GPU.

Well apparently OP has some. Overclocked 2500K is definitely enough to push all the juices out of R9 390 @ 1440p.
