    My finger points

    Good morning everybody!

I had a bit of a weird chat with colleagues after we came out of a meeting with a client of ours giving a presentation.

It might be odd, but every time the speaker was pointing to various things on a powerpoint slide, he used his middle finger as a means of gesture.

I myself have always used my index finger when pointing to something, and found it quite bizarre that the use of the middle finger was used.

It might be that I am from the UK (I know its common in other countries), but the middle finger is normally used for, lets say, expressing distaste at something. It did result in us spending a packed train journey swearing at each other to the delight of other commuters.

In a nutshell, what finger do you use for gesturing or pointing?

And bonus points if people get the thread title reference!

You might want to look up, what "index finger" means. "Indicare" IS "pointing".

I once heard that using the middle finger to point is a subtle way to nonverbally say you are above the others. Better than them. I have nothing to back that up though.

As far as I know the index finger is universally the pointing finger, although in varying degrees. In some cultures it is rude to point a finger - any finger - at a person, for instance.

I point at things with my whole hand, much more polite. Obviously index finger when pointing at a precise spot.

Even small children use their index finger to point at things, so i guess it's not even a conscious decision. Either that guy was kind of passive aggressive, or just plain weird.

In middle eu we point with index finger on objects and full hand on people. Using index finger to point on people is considered rude, or expressing anger.
