People were carrying weapons to the protest in response to the protesters being armed and even every day people were walking around armed, even if the weapon wasn't in plain view, because of continual issues with harassment and assault by the protesters.

I mean, I could understand the "why would you go armed if you weren't looking for a fight" argument, from some people. Why are we even talking about the Bellamy Salute? It originated in the late 19th Century, decades before the Nazis emerged and adopted a similar salute. It was then officially discarded, never to be used again, in 1942, precisely because of its similarity to that Nazi salute.

Unless you're 80 years old, you were never taught the Bellamy Salute, and it's just a historical oddity (80 years old would put you at being 5 in 1942, where you might have been taught this in Kindergarten). It's completely irrelevant, and isn't what these asshats were using.
