Ah, but the biggest pushing element there is always what the loudest mouths are saying, and by getting all of the major voices in the religious vote on his side, Trump effectively gained the religious vote. Your local church pastor says Trump's a douche, but 20 Jerry Falwells, James Dobsons, Paula Whites, and Billy Graham Jrs say he's the second coming - people tend to listen.

It's just perfect that they overwhelmingly support what amounts to a false prophet.

That's just hearsay. We don't know why they voted overwhelmingly for Trump just that they did so. Moreover you paint them as some sort of blind sheep willing to listen to any word that comes from their leaders mouths and blindly follow it. People don't work like that. They don't just do a 100% about face because someone tells them to.

Acidbaron was spot on when he called them bottom feeders. They really do love Trump, and that tells you everything you need to know about what sorts of people they are. But there is a bright side.....

The bottom feeders are not creating enough new bottom feeders.
    Go atheism!
Democrats are the best! I will never ever question a Democrat again. I LOVE the Democrats!

I'd argue that the religious crowd tends to be bred to do exactly that. That's pretty much what the whole thing is about.

I mostly only have anecdotal evidence. My mother back in Nebraska is a pretty firm Republican and a very hardcore Christian. But for the first time in 40 years of voting, she was debating a non-Republican vote. Not only did she oppose everything out of Trump's mouth, she'd post regular updates about what her pastors and what not were saying about condemning Trump, and sharing links to his "many sins."

But then one day she texts me, asking what I thought about Trump and if maybe the media had him all wrong. She went on to mention that Billy Graham Jr had just put out a statement strongly in support of Trump. She grew up in the prime of Jr's father, Billy Graham, whom she nearly idolized as a prime Christian example, and saw this as a big enough deal to swing her 180 on Trump.

Of course, she didn't end up voting for Trump. She called or texted me about a dozen more times up until the election having these back and forths, though; because between Fox News (her only news source), the top evangelical voices, and most of the right wing saying "You have to go Trump," and only her own personal morals and education fighting the other battle, it seemed like a daily moral crisis.

I don't think these people are the ultimate say, but they're definitely a massive impact. That's the whole reason politicians spend so much time courting them and not chatting with real people.

(It occurred to me after I sat down that I may be inaccurate on specifics about who Graham is, because heck if I know who these people are. I fell out of the church thing in my teens, to my mother's endless disappointment)

It makes zero sense for a christian to support Trump. He has spent his entire life doing the exact opposite of what Jesus taught. By voting for Trump they admit their "values" don't mean very much. If I talk to a christian that voted for Trump and they want to discuss anything related to greed, gluttony, honesty, etc... how the hell am I suppose to take them seriously?

Goes for dems too, though, just to a lesser extent. Among all of the candidates if christians had been voting for the ones that most lined up with the teachings of the new testament it would have been Kasich vs Sanders (yes, I know).

Well... evangelicals usually don't have a problem with those issues to begin with. They're not against greed. Jesus and capitalism goes hand in hand to them.

    After Nazis who's left?

    Them.
