So my friend and I decided to watch Cowboy Bebop; he had already seen it, but years ago and is always down to re-watch it. I've heard varying opinions on it, usually pertaining to it being "style over substance". I can see that perspective rendering true, albeit not true entirely. It's not all fun n' games being a bounty hunter and a lot of the characters' backstories are grim and doleful. The show itself is wonderful in the episodic theme, soundtrack, OP/ED, characters, etc. We'll see where it goes.

We're also planning on watching Planetes. As a "this looks interesting, let's try it out."

I cannot conceive of believing Cowboy Bebop is "style over substance." It has style in spades, but it's wrapped around an extremely weighty core. I don't like to make conclusions about people, but I strongly suspect that (s)he does not have the requisite maturity to appreciate it. It reminds me of a lyric to a song I heard that goes, "The young can't sing the blues." And that's really what Cowboy Bebop is ultimately, reflective and regretful.

Anyway, I don't pretend to even fully appreciate it in that regard. It isn't aimed at me as a person, but even being caught in the side glare gives me an appreciation of what it does. Maybe I should write a review...

My friend was eluding to the fact that the show was not so much about random fun adventures laden with laughs, but change in the characters and some revelation about their past. We're not even half-way through so I'm sure there is much more to discover.

When I watched Fate last week, I was on the verge of dropping it; very little entertained me. This week's episode was pretty solid and I like seeing the servants clash. Here's to hoping the next few episodes continue the hype. Shirou's playing chess and all these masters playing checkers.
