Not sure why people call him a despicable racist, for making a sarcastic joke to defuse a situation. Especially when half the internet seems belief that he spoke the truth anyway.
Sure, you can discipline him for making an inappropriate comment, but some reactions here are way overboard.
I also think people need to realize that you need to cut cops some slack if you want to judge their behaviour in stress situations from your comfy armchair, especially since they usually aren't magna cum laude university graduates.
Fact is the way he went about the situation was wrong. I work in a prison in Canada and god forbid if I were to say something like that to some of societies worst people. Officers are suppose to be held to a higher standard, there are other ways of deescalating the situation that are more appropriate. Sarcasm or not, joking or not, that isn't something you say while in uniform plain and simple. I don't care what others think, that is the world we currently live in. This officer kicked himself in the ass and he just has to deal with the shitstorm he has created.
Hopefully other officers throughout the US will not make the same mistake.
I don't believe he is a racist, however I do believe using THAT sarcastic joke to defuse the situation was wrong. I don't believe he should be fired but what he did was wrong and I believe they are also making an example out of him. Lastly police officers are trained to deal with more stressful situations than correctional officers. However this officer was not in a stressful situation at all, this situation was pretty easy to deal with so he should have been able to deal with it a lot better than he did.

I think the cop was more stupid than the people being upset about it. He should have known this isn't the kind of thing you can joke around about anymore.
He probably isn't racist, just stupid and quite unprofessional. People will never stop feeling sensitive about these things so all you can do is not make those kinds of jokes.
Sounds like the officer isn't a genuine racist, and was trying to make a joke to diffuse. I don't agree with it though, he could have been much more tactful.
Considering how hot the racist topic is in America currently with the KKK, Trump supporters and other morons, making a joke about racist murder probably isn't the smartest of choices, especially for a policeman. I'd want him to no longer be a policeman based on the level of stupidity necessary for that alone.
Also, it's kind of like a German saying "we only gas Jews", but on a smaller level. Would people really defend that?
