It's being reported by the Washington Post that Manafort offered private campaign briefings to "aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin".

We know he did business with this guy and others and was also in some serious debt. I don't think there's any doubt at this point that Manafort was working for their interests to alleviate pressure on himself.

Gonna be interesting to see if Mueller's team can draw lines between all of this and the Trump family.

Not just any business but explicitly pro-Putin business. He (Deripaska) also asked for and was denied immunity in relation to the Russia probes.

To be fair this Manafort being dirty stuff is about 10 years old, hardly new. People like him have dodged bullets for a long time and are so well connected. Esp in Republican circles. Justice isn't for the powerful.

It looks like that tide will change. Flynn and Manafort already in circle-of-indictment with Mueller.

To me, that makes me think Trump has nothing to do with it, he is just that stupid... or... that Trump is so brazen, he would hire this guy, because he wanted to flaunt it. With so much scrutiny for so long, there is no moderate reason to hire the guy.

That's entirely possible. And yet, he was also stupid enough to fire Comey to try to make that investigation go away, and that's currently backfiring way harder than if he had just ridden it out.

That's what I mean. Even Bannon said it was the dumbest move in modern politics. I don't think he willfully colluded with Russia, just too stupid to understand what is going on around him.

I wouldn't QUITE say he didn't willfully collude with Russia; if his son's actions are any indication, I think it's probable he colluded in minor ways that he didn't realize were illegal.

Yeah, I can agree with that.

But that being said, both Dick Cheney and Joe Biden were given enormous portfolios, power and influence. Far beyond their predecessors. The Presidency had grown to the size that certain responsibilities are best divided by two people (dare I say, not dissimilar to how the position of Roman Emperor was split into two, then into four?)

It's unclear what Pence's power is at the present since the Donald Trump show only has one star.

But to be precise, all that power is what is delegated by the President. As a matter of law, the VP is relatively powerless.

Yes, many are the jokes that have been made about the Vice President's uselessness. John Nance Garber said the position "isn't worth a pitcher of warm piss." John Adams told his wife, "My country has in its wisdom contrived for me the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." Harry Truman called the office "useful as a cow's fifth teat." And Daniel Webster declined to serve as VP, saying, "I do not propose to be buried until I am really dead and in my coffin."

The thing is, the powers and responsibilities of the office have grown substantially since then. This largely began with FDR, who invited his VPs to cabinet meetings, and was solidified when he died and Harry Truman was sworn in, an event with demonstrated the need to keep the VP informed so that he would be up to speed if he had to step in. Most presidents since then have given their VPs progressively more responsibilities.

Mueller requests White House documents related to Trump conduct

Special counsel Robert Mueller has asked the White House to turn over documents related to some of President Trump’s most controversial actions in office, including his dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey, The New York Times reports.

Citing White House officials, the Times reported that Mueller is also interested in the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as well as an Oval Office meeting with Russian officials during which Trump reportedly said the Comey firing relieved “great pressure” on him.

Mueller has also requested documents related to the White House response to media questions about a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and a Russian government lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton.

The document requests are the clearest indication yet that at least some aspects of Mueller’s probe are focused on the president’s behavior in office. The special counsel has broadly been examining Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller’s office reportedly sent a document detailing 13 different areas that his investigators want to know more about, and administration lawyers have since been hunting through White House emails and asking whether officials have any other documents related to the request.

The lawyer handling the matter for the president, Ty Cobb, told Mueller’s office that he will turn over many of the documents this week, according to the Times.

The special counsel has asked for any and all documents relating to former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, a key subject of the probe, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. Agents raided Manafort's home in Virginia last month, taking information on his finances.

Mueller's team has also requested details surrounding meetings then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates had with White House Counsel Don McGahn in January when she expressed her concerns about Flynn, as well as documents relating to Flynn's firing, according to the Post.

2027-2050 are dramatic dates. The Trump era will definitely be over before that, you must not believe the opposite side has the good ideas to make the country prosper.

I quite like John Garner's description of it as "not worth a bucket of warm piss".
