Jobs saved. At 1.5 million dollar (canadian) each.

Gaspésie is a gorgeous region of Québec, plagued by unemployment-the main industry was fisheries and I could say it never recovered from the Great Banks collapse, but the region was always desperately poor, even by colonial French Canada standards.

Schemes to bring ''jobs'' have been constantly tried, with dismal results. The latest one is a cement plant, that will bring 400 jobs in the area. YEAH !.

Each one will cost to the French-Canadian taxpayer 1.5 million dollars. in various grants or help. (Not to mention that showing some serious chutzpah, American cement plants are threatening to sue for pollution)

I'm sure they expect the cement plant to be profitable and eventually pay back the investment, with the positive externality of fueling the local economy and generating a chain of employment.

Cement plants are nasty things, putting them in areas in need will make locals happy, and not putting them in well established areas will also make locals happy.

If the only purpose of giving public funds was the jobs, this might be accurate. But the money is going towards producing more than just jobs for individuals.

At 1.5 billion dollar investment (not to mention that there is not exactly a pressing need for cement plant) it will require to sell a LOT of cement.

A country that gives an apology and 11 million dollars to a terrorist doesn't spend their money wisely.

Atleast we acknowledge going against his rights, as a human. The shit he did was also when he was 15 and heavily brainwashed by his father. Regardless, I'd rather that happen in my country then have some innocent people tortured in a blacksite.

One, that the Federal, not the provincial. Two, it's not our fault if even your military court struggled to stick charges to him. Three, it's fracking cheap to sue enemy combattants, even illegal ones, for people dying in war. Did people sue the handful of Japanese POWs of Iwo Jima for the death of their relatives ?

You're right, the government should've spent triple that fighting a court case they would've lost!

Lots of them, but they tend to be in French.

Didn't Canada spend billions of dollars trying to create tech companies? Gave out grants to people with tech ideas? Did anything ever come of that?

    This was some years ago.

Have to invest to make any attempt at growth. Can't just wish jobs into existence.

At 1.5 million dollars each, it's quite an investment.

Our tech sector is a joke. Canadians get paid at least half of what they do in the USA for the same work with a higher cost of living on average. It's no wonder our graduates are going south while we bring in immigrants or outsource the jobs.

part of the investment is a direct loan from "investissement quebec" and the rest is from "caisse de depot et placement" witch is an institution that manages public retirement funds and other... (it's actually a very respected institution).

They created a sophisticated forum AI bot that seeks out fringe Canadian news articles to post multiple times a day, code named TA. It even learns over time on how to continue it's posting while just barely skirting by forum rules. It's truly a technological marvel.

Onterrible is much worse, our premier is gonna spend 5.5 million dollars on a 30 second commercial highlighting the savings she's giving to hydro bills. Which is a problem she created in the first place...
