Finished Amagi Brilliant Park after stalling on episode 2 about a month ago. The start was slow but the show got so much better after the setup. The juxtaposition between the appearance of the characters and how they acted was fantastic and I laughed aloud almost every episode. Character design was amazing, especially the girls from Muse. Kanie was a great lead and the supporting cast was likable and memorable. Surprised that the score is not above 8 on MAL.

8.5/10, really glad I got around to watching the rest.

It wasn't until episode 10 that the show started to show blood and even past that there were only two sequences that actually featured blood, gore or disfigurement. The fight against Ozen might have been forlorn but it was completely devoid of any explicit violence or even gore.

Made in Abyss was already very popular before that, in fact it was incredibly popular since episode one because it is simply a faithful adaptation of a very solid story.

You're right in the sense that the age of the characters influences how much the audience is impacted by the harm that befalls them, but your deduction is completely wrong. The explicitness of the violence shown is not directly related to making the show (even) more popular. It was the fact that Made in Abyss largely presented itself as a children's adventure up until that point, though it did give us plenty of hints to the dangers that lurk in the Abyss.

Made in Abyss established a densely atmospheric, well thought out world and populated it with endearing characters. It shrouded itself in mystery and adventure to draw the audience in and used the bond that it formed between the audience and the characters to bring down the hammer of reality with full force. That is why it's so popular.

Saying that it's cashing in on the shock effect and the age of the characters does it a great injustice.

I said the world setting was pretty good. But One Piece has a good world setting and it's a story about exploration as well. Most stories are about exploration if you think about it. The cliche anime where the protagonist fights a series of enemies? The protagonists is learning, or exploring, about the strengths and weaknesses of each opponent.

The only way to tell if the gore porn doesn't have an effect on the series popularity is to come out with two copies at the same time, a violent one and a less violent one and show them to two different audiences. Violence is just like porn, people will watch a mediocre series for the violence alone. When they go talk the series up to their friends they aren't going to talk about the world setting or the story, they are going to talk about the botched amputation or Mitty.

Violence isn't a draw or focal point at all. It's the strong characterisation of the main characters that makes you care for them. Even before anything happens to them, you get to know them, you get to know about their lives (so far) and you get to understand what drives them and makes them tick. This is just good story-telling, which pushes the story along.

If violence causes a reaction to you or anyone else at a later point, because a character they care about has been hurt, then it's a sign of good writing. That is all. The violence that occurs would be no less traumatic, whether inflicted upon a child or adult. It's whether you care about them at all, before it happens that matters.
