Just an FYI: his actions were highly illegal. You can't just fire into a crowd. He wasn't in a situation where his life, or anyone else's life was in danger. If you didn't know it was about white supremacy, then you were clearly not paying attention at that rally. No, it's absolutely relevant. If I showed up to a protest for a cause I believed in and I discovered most of the people in the protest were Nazis or some other abominable group and they were shouting disgusting things, I would leave immediately.

The only reasons, to my knowledge, you can withhold bail is because the person is a significant flight risk or public safety risk. (Correct me if I'm wrong here.)

And firing a gun within 1000 feet of a school is a Class 4 Felony. Section 18.2-280(B)-(C) of the Virginia code for those interested. Max sentence 1 year in jail or a $2500 fine. Murderers are routinely given bail.

You read that statute wrong. Max sentence is 10 years; max fine is 100k. That's a link to virginia state's website that enumerates their laws. That specific page lists penalties. The minimum sentence is 2 years btw. Your wrongness and hyperbole on easily checked facts just make you look foolish.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A Baltimore Ku Klux Klan leader charged with firing a pistol during a violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville has been denied bail despite his claim that he acted in self-defense.

Richard Wilson Preston is accused of firing a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school during the August rally.

The Daily Progress reports Preston told a judge Thursday that he drew his pistol twice: first when he was threatened by a man he thought was going to throw a newspaper box at him and again when threatened by a man with a nail-laden stick.

He said he fired a shot after a friend was threatened by a counterprotester holding a makeshift flamethrower.

The judge's ruling means Preston will remain in the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail pending a December hearing.

The most offensive thing about this story is he fired a leveled shot in a crowd and didn't hit anything. So he either filled his pistol with blanks or he might be the worst shooter since those NYC cops fired at Amadou Diallo.
