WotLK already treated us as above the run-of-the-mill adventurers running around. Explicitly, if you start as Alliance in Borean Tundra.

More specificially, somebody took the general concepts of the last 3 expansions, tacked on some of his own guesswork, then tried to pass it off as internal dev documents. He got WoD wrong, though, since the whole time travel thing wasn't the original plan for it.
