Be one of the heroes who wishes to pledge themselves to the king, voiced by Patrick Stewart himself, to deal with a wicked witch. Yet things goes from south, to much, MUCH further south, the more you progress the game. Everytime you think you've made a step forward, other horrid things happens. At a point, you must spend a good part of the game collecting ingrediences for a cure - and you're only told a riddle of what they are (in a voice that almost makes me shiver everytime I hear it) which I still like to this day, even if there are better out there but still, have to include it.

"First, you must butcher the creature whose flesh has never lived.
Next, you must see the sweetness of your enemy.
Your third ingredient must be collected from the deadly depths.
Lastly, you will need the powders taken from the heart of your mother."

Tip: Grid-Based.

I have one close to this one.

You gain a small amount of power from the boss you kill.
Eventually you go back time. The end is the beginning. It is a time loop !

Braid? There's only 1 boss, and you get a key from him which could be a small amount of power.
And 'the end is the beginning' could be to do with you rescuing the princess from the knight, which turns out to be her running away from you, thus starting the story.
