I'm more confused now than when I asked. Maybe I should know better than to expect someone being willing to explain the pro con. Because as an outsider who hasn't followed/obsessed about it it seems like a dead topic that everyone is making a big deal out of and talking in circles without actually ever saying anything concrete.

I'm so confused. If it is too complicated to say what is being discussed, how do you know what is being discussed? I'm asking here because it's one of the largest threads on the internets about it, this is my attempt to understand the sides as they have become today.


Like, if this "movement" wants people to understand things or motivate change and their best pitch when people ask what they are about is "go dig up facts, the truth is ambiguous and everyone is a liar" it just sounds like a bunch of conspiracy theorists ranting about literally nothing. I am so, so thoroughly confused now.

Long story short Zoe Quinn made a garbage game that got lots of coverage and 10/10s but noone cared because it wasnt any good. Then her ex boyfriend came out and said she was cheating on him with her reviewers. So Gamers laughed and laughed and laughed, then stopped laughing when they connected to dots in their head and realized "Wait was her garbage game getting 10/10s because she was sleeping with people for ratings?" That question led to a way bigger backlash than it should of resulting in a bunch of websites shouting that "Gamers are dead" and "No longer the audience Game Developers should be making for" which led to a bigger shit show after more information got dug up showing that yes Game Journalism is basically full of cronyism, nepotism, and various other isms that any groups calling themselves journalists shouldnt do.

Yeah, really the SJWs arent even the real fuckin perpetrators here like a lot of people thought. Theyre easy as fuck to whip around though if you know how to get their attention though which is what the Game Journos were doing because being a Game Journo is a very cushy job and they didnt want to lose their jobs so they were trying to grab a new market at the same time(hence why Game Journalism got really weird for a while). They basically cried out "omg gamers are uber misogynists and bigots and they hate Harry Potter etc" giving themselves a personal army of idiots who will crusade against anything as long as someone tells them they're the good guys.
So this went on for a while because SJWs kept demanding that games be changed, and Gamers kept demanding that developers not change shit for people who dont even buy their games. Surprise! a bunch of gaming news sites went under, a few games tanked because they pandered to the wrong audience, a bunch of Journos are now broke and now were somewhere in the middle and no one is really happy with that. Meanwhile a bunch of Gamergaters now furious because everyone got an unsatisfying Pyrrhic victory dispersed among the chans and the combined effort of the pissed off part of the 80s and 90s generation memed Donald Trump into office as a giant middle finger to SJWs, and everyone else trying to co-op their hobbies and escapes into vehicles for someones political message; ironically turning into a political movement themselves.

This has been a basic history of Gamergate. If I missed anything point it out and Ill ramble an explanation.

Nah, the way I see it they were victims in it too because they were basically swung around at everyone and everything that didnt argue in favor of corrupt Games Journalists. Of course they arent going anywhere, there will always be people who will use victimhood of being offended to get what they want at the expense of somebody else.
Corrupt Games Journalists were the real goal. Which basically covers: Journos who take bribes for good reviews, Journos who dont disclose relations to the people who make products that they are reviewing, Journos who blacklist other Journos for not playing along, etc. Gamergate was about halfway successful for reasons I listed earlier, but now since the focus has changed to politics and SJWs no one is bothering to dig anymore so who knows what's still going on. On the positive side Gamers are now more conscientious about what they purchase, looking to each other for news on games, and new game news sites have popped up that practice good game journalism.

Yeah right, keep projecting. Girls just love to be spoken to by strangers on the street. I believe there's even articles written in sites such as jezebel and many others that aren't even SJW related about how you shouldn't do this. Maybe you'll see articles supporting it on one of those MRA or PUA sites, but beyond that, probably not so much, because it's kind of creepy. Now shops you might have an argument for that, especially if it's a niche shop, shared interests and all. And really, the point here, you're coming to a forum who's main focus is world of warcraft and other mmos to discuss how to speak to women or give your advice on how to speak to women.
