Blizz is doing this because there are probably no more than a few million subscriptions to the current game. Sure, it surges briefly with a new expansion with smaller surges after each new raid is released, but the average number of constant subscriptions is likely well below 5 million now (possibly as low as 3 million). Years ago I could tell you the reality of their subscriptions (their reported numbers were always a bit higher than reality), but they've merged all online financials into a single bucket now, purposefully making it impossible to estimate the number of subs anymore.
Anyways, Blizz would like to see a lot more constant subscriptions. Nostalrius and similar illegal servers demonstrated that there are actually a million or more people who would like to play the original game. Although there are complications, the amount of effort to set up a decent quality version of Vanilla isn't that much in the greater scheme of things, and Blizz likely thinks that they can get at least a couple of million people who aren't interested in the current version of the game to pay again to play the original.
As for playing WoW Classic with current updates, you can do that now. Just start a brand new character.
TL;DR - Blizz is looking at putting minimal effort to snag a couple of million subs that they don't have today. Blizz is not looking to expend a large effort to get people who play the current version to play a modified Wow Classic (i.e. no net gain of subs).
