Well, the 6850 slightly outperforms the GTX 460 (very slightly). They're roughly the same price, with the GTX 460 even being slightly ($10) more. I'd have to say the 6850 is the better buy of the two right now.
And having in mind noise, temperatures and view (at least for me the 6850 looks better with the closed box like design) I think there are more than enough reasons
hell, i still play with an 4670, maxxed out cod black ops haha, and still round 40fps on cod, and 70 on wow(10 mans)

Resolution, resolution, resolution. Those of you playing with 5770 and maxed graphics (including AA and AF) must be playing on low resolutions, as I am running a OC'd 5850 with 1920x1080 and getting hiccups in BFBC2 with everything maxed and even in COD:BO when there's alot of smoke involved, nothing too harsh but a visible fps drop from 60 to 20's.
Checking at HardwareOCP:s review of the 5770 which includes BFBC2, 5770 averages 41 fps at 1900x1200 without AA, I wouldn't buy a 5770 for serious gaming with maxed eyecandy at that resolution. That's single player, mind you.
But that's just me again. 5770 was a really good card for the price, let's say until GTX460 launch, today I would not recommend it for higher resolutions. As the threadstarter still has not specified his resolution, I can't really recommend anything.
He also has not specified games, but seeing as he mentioned 'future-proof', the 460 is the better choice.

I don't believe anyone has recommended a 5770. Personally, my posts have specifically stated:
and[...]there's really no reason to get a 5770 over a GTX 460.
The second was in reference to the 6850 vs the GTX 460.I'd have to say the 6850 is the better buy of the two right now.
Proving that a card isn't obsolete is far from suggesting it as a purchase.
