I'm almost sure that Proving Grounds scales with your ilvl now, so you can enter and have a decent chance at complete it at any gear level.
However, I did my 30 achievement on my prot paladin yesterday, and it was pretty challenging aswell, so gratz

I also did this on my Blood DK, it was surprisingly easy. The AoE packs melt from blood boil and you just need to save your CDs for the single target waves.
