also keep in mind that they have increased the amount of XP the followers get from completing world quests, so you can quite easily lvl them up fast.

and they do not need to be 900 ilvl to earn proper xp from WQ so it is a valuable way to level up a champion if you are in a hurry.
Else gray -> green -> blue is quite fast anyway.

Cool, I may have to take him out and see how he plays at some point. I'm not a huge fan of assigning followers to follow me around as they tend to keep me in combat longer than I'd like.

Maybe you should pick a champion with special abilities more than an actual "follower" since you cannot really control them.
As a mage, I think the best champ for this slot is Vargoth. 20% damage buff is quite valuable !! and it is others-friendly too. cause everybody around can get the buff.

The only complaint I have against "bodyguard" type champions is their annoying tendency to always stand on the thing I am trying to loot. So I click the champion half the time by accident.
