I think exorcism is far more iconic than hammer of wrath.

Present in WC2, present in WC3 via the healing spell, present all the way up until Legion - you know, the time when it would have actually been logically important - exorcising demons. Hammer of Wrath as an ability has always been fantastic, but the name itself is hardly class defining. It fulfilled the role that exorcism should have.

Also, calling something "Retri" is moronic. When you simplify things you go to fewest syllables. I don't know a single person that calls Ret "Retri"

    Exorcism? Iconic? How?
Because what we had in wc3 was anything but exorcism.
And what we had for exorcism during TBC could barely pass as a usable spell, and it was barely viable in wotlk.
Divine Shield? That's more iconic, and so were auras, along with Seals.
Hammer of Wrath? Sure as sure it was iconic. Powerful more often than not. Usable. Our crutch. Our low-mobility solution. The actual Final Verdict.

As to "retri" being moronic or not, it depends on country and language, I think.
Here in Motherland Retribution Paladins are called "retri", "retro", but most often - "retrick", because it isounds better and rolls off the tongue easier.

Anything but? Thats exactly what the healing spell did - 50% damage to demons and undead. Thats exorcism buddy. Only reason it was combined into 1 spell is because they wanted to limit all heroes to 3 abilities. If they didn't want to include exorcism they wouldn't have given the healing spell a double function. From your post I can only assume you think power = iconography. That's not how it works, the mainstay ability of a Paladin has been Exorcism for 22ish years - from Warcraft 2 until WoW legion. Whether they implemented it in a shit way has nothing to do with how iconic it was. You couldn't even target players with Exorcism properly until 4 years in - WotLK and it wasn't until about half way through. Still been there longer than HoW.

    Power doesn't = iconic.

Polymorph is an iconic mage spell, does no damage. Been around since WC2.

Save your breath, arguing with the shitposters will only make them angrier and more irrational in their defense of the almighty Hammer of Wrath.

Thank god Blizz removed it so people could come out of the woodworks on MMOC and defend its holy righteous existence with such wasted fervor.

Divine shield is probably the most iconic spell though, one of the few pally abilities that non pallies will be able to identify.

    Yes, anything but.
Exorcism was supposed to damage undead/demons. Never ever did it heal allies, like Holy Light did.
You saying it was exorcism substitute does not make it so.
Excusing it with "they wanted heroes to have four spells" does not pass as an argument.
Amount of time spell exists hardly matters by the way.
Take Divine Shield for example, though.
It exists almost in the exact same form since wc3.
Iconic has anything to do with which ability a class/spec is most associated with.
And it's not exorcism. You think Paladin, you think the Holy trinity of "plate, bubble and heals" foremost.

    Well said sir.
That's quite a nice way to have a proper discussion. Thank you for tagging us with "shitposters" moniker.
May I suggest you feth yourself kindly?

Yeah, maybe if you have zero self respect and think the warcraft universe began with WoW. What you're describing is a holy paladin, not a retribution paladin.

And you think they wouldn't be able to identify HoW? It's projectile animation was entirely unique, and very obvious, as were the impact sound and animation effects.

So iconic just = amount of effort put into ability animation and effects? If the spell did exactly the same thing, but have no animation or sound would it still be iconic?

    No, but it certainly helps.

Kinda hard for something to be iconic if it can't be seen.

I would most definitely consider it more iconic for Ret than Divine Shield specifically because Divine Shield is defensive, whereas Hammer of Wrath is offensive, and Retribution is an offensive spec, not a defensive spec.

What does my selfrespect have to do with topic?
The whole paladin stereotype in warcraft universe is loosely based upon DnD, to begin with.
If you want to trace history, there's your starting point. Which means Smite Evil(judgement), lay on hands (self explanatory), and empower weapon (Seals).
WC2 Paladins were just knights on a horse, with a single spell.
Wc3 paladins sure as sure were anything but Retribution, more akin to Holy.
I'm yet to find a person who associates Retribution with Exorcism, and question his reasons "why".

I would suggest a poll at this point.

Well this has gone down hill (and off topic) quickly.

    Closing.
